A goiter or enlarged thyroid gland is usually removed for one (or more) of the following reasons:

1-thyroid cancer
2-thyroid is enlarged to the point that it's sticking out and makes the neck look lumpy
3-thyroid is enlarged to the point that it interferes with breathing

I had thyroid cancer and that's why I had my thyroid removed. But it had grown to the point that there was a little bump in my neck. I never even noticed the bump, my doctor found it.
