Exactly the conclusion i have had in mind for ages, ships converted into floating prisons moored off the coast or in a remote loch, without the normal luxuries, hard labour is what is needed now not playstations etc, try tunnelling out of a ship!! & before you do-gooders bleat on about prisoners rights, think about the rights of the folk who have been a victim to the scum of society or the children who have lost their lives to the hands of murderers did these scum concider their rights? i think not!

Its not the high crime rate that is the issue, its the way the courts deal with low level crime, they send someone down for comitting criminal damage or repeat shoplifting offenders taking up a space where a real criminal should be?

Hell do what they do in NZ where i am from, stick low level offenders in bright orange boiler suits and get them picking up rubbish on the side of the 'A' and 'B' roads or clearing up graffiti with a brush and bucket under the watch eye of a probation officer, it embarrasses the hell out of them and would save a cell space giving them a months hard labour rather a month in prison on a playstation, it will also lead to cleaner roadsides in the UK. a bonus for the greenies amoungst us.

Althought i now live in the UK i can say Blah to the European Human Rights Charter, dont get me wrong in New Zealand we do follow the UN version but hell we do not let it govern us.

The best way to deal with this issue is to tackle the actual problem which is to reduce the amount of prisoners in the first place. This could easily be achieved by INCREASING prison sentences to ensure that crime doesn't pay.

Years ago, this was the case and crime figures were considerably lower than they are now. Then the woolly-hatted sandal-wearers moved in and changed all that. Those of us with brain cells numerically greater than their shoe size could see that this was a recipe for disaster and this soon proved to be so. Now, thirty years on, we STILL can't see where we're going wrong.

Still, I'm sure they know best.

A cheaper solution for the US, use hundreds of confiscated guns and thousands of rounds of ammo. Each prisoner gets a gun and 10 rounds of ammo. Remove all guards and civilians, from the prison and surround it with soldiers to prevent escapes. Four hours later, remove the bodies and start filling the "Empty" prison again LOL Three months later and the US will not have another overcrowded prison ever. Better still, hang all the murderers, drug dealers and drug addicts, in public. Charge the public $10 to watch and raise millions of $s for the victims of those criminals.

I don't think its a bad idea at all. The reality, is with our population increasing, we are going to have to look to new ideas for prisons and the reform system. I can't see the problem getting smaller.
If people don't like the idea they could always have a new prison built at the bottom of their street, or would they be the first to object?
Hey Bumkin I would vote for you.

while this has always been a sensible option, the prison ship used in the 80's was virtually abandoned, a mix of union unwillingness to work and lots of 'human rights' claims. It was suggested that ferries could be used for low level prisoners and they have the advantage of being easily adapted to small factory units, skill centres, training facilities etc. Common sense never flows from government!

does no longer it is extreme high quality to think of that at some point by way of DNA decision the Earth must be rid of all the low-existence primitive fascist scumbags, and there in basic terms be people who care and share...........I as quickly as belived we've been destined as a species to conform to a point the place that should ensue, however the 'primitive' genes in basic terms shop on being reproduced and nurtured, from the appropriate all the way down to the backside.

Good idea!

But in my humble opinion, prisoners should not have any human rights! They broke the law, some of them commiting horrific crimes, Overcrowding should be the least they can expect!

They should be given a few strokes of the birch on exiting prison to remind them not to reoffend.

If they made prison a really tough , harsh places, people would think twice about recommitting
No matter what the government say about over crowding to me it proves they are nice places to be or people would dread going back in side
