My girlfriend and I decided to take my cat over to her apartment to see how her cat would react to him. At first she just hissed at him and he'd carefully move away from her and avoid her. Then, after a while, as she would softly hiss at him as she watched him move about my girlfriend's apartment. Whenever her cat did this, my cat would stop and look over to her and make a clicking noise with his mouth. Her cat would look at mine as if he was nuts and not hiss anymore. Then, a little later she would softly hiss again and he'd stop, look at her and make that noise again. For the most part, they got along as well as two indoor cats would on a first meeting - meaning they never took any aggressive moves at each other.

So, we were wondering, were our cats communicating to one another? I know it sounds silly, but it really seemed everytime my girlfriend's cat hissed, my cat stopped, explained himself and she let him move on without hissing at him again for a little bit.

Of course they were communicating (not silly at all). Sounds like a good sign, though! Clicking and hissing is normal, and if nobody got the daylights kicked out of them, this is a go!

Move in with girl and cat?

Well, I learned something new when researching this.

YES - cats DO communicate. It does NOT sound silly to me.

Do keep a close eye on the cats in this situation. The clicking sound is a sound they make when they have spotted prey and are ready to leap! So... the clicker was telling the hisser... if you bug me, you're MY prey! It was a challenge, I think. Good thing they didn't fight.

Below are some links to help you learn more about cat communication. This was a neat topic.

It sounds like they might be able to get along with each other.
Of course cats are just cats. They get scared and want to protect all that belongs to them. They hate it when someone invades the home. I would keep this up if I were ya'll.
And to answer your question, of course they were talking to each other -
they may never like each other, but integrating now sounds like a good idea.

My cays kind of squeal when they see someone. Purr when happy Little "nom nom" noises in their sleep growl when bothered Hiss when really bothered Yelp when they are lonely One of my cats is somewhat fat, so he's always panting. Tiny little "Mew! Mew!" when they are hungry Screeches when they are being carried, but want to be put down.

All I know is that my cat makes that clicking sound when she sees birds outside. My guess is it is some kind of aggression sound...maybe it's more of a challenge, whereas hissing is a warning.

They are communicating ,you are right leaving them to make friends in their own way is the best thing to do .Their vocal sounds send out a lot of meaning. Each sound means something different the same as in any other Language. In time they will be best pals.

Cats usually make this clicking sound to birds, so it must not be something friendly. I think it is a threatening sound, so your cats expressed their threat to one another and they found a balance after all.
