my current doctor has had a heart attack and is now in ICU and its not looking good, usually when you want to change doctors you have to get your current doctor to give your new doctor all your files and record but how would I do that when he’s in hospital? and what happens if he dies?

he has a stand in doctor for when he’s not available, will he sort out all the files?? (I don’t want that quack of a stand in to be my doctor!!)
and what if I need to talk to my doctor about something now, who do I go to ?

cheers!

Your situation is easily remedied, but not without some work from you. While your DR is in ICU I would use the time to check out other Dr's and do some research. Almost all Dr's are listed online and you can check out their negative and positive qualities. If a DR doesn't have a posting they probably have something to hide. The more research you do the better your outcome will be. If you don't want to see the quack DR in between I would go to the emergency room if necessary. Even if your DR doesn't die I would definitely be on the look out for a new one. Asking other people isn't always the best thing to do as everyone has an opinion just like they have an as*****. It is an important decision and the ball is squarely in your hands. Once you narrow down your list you can begin to "interview" new Dr's. Rely on your sound judgment and you will be just fine. Almost forgot, the new a Dr will have his nurse or office assistant request your old medical records. Good Luck!!! Cheers back at ya!!

I'm sorry about the loss of your doctor. Chances are, if you find a new doctor, it will be the office staff who sends your records to your new doctor, regardless of the reason you leave the practice.

If you don't like the stand-in, you can always find a polite way to say that you and he are not compatible in deciding your care. You can ask the staff, you can ask another practitioner you go to for a recommendation, or you can ask friends who they see.

usually if your doctor dies or retires then his patients are notified of the loss. this gives them an option to choose if they want to use the doctors that he's in practice with or go elsewhere. if he has a stand in md in place then they usually recommend that doc. if he doesnt suit you then your new doctor will request your files be transferred. i'm sure that office has a plan of action in place while your current doc is in the hospital. give them a call.

I would talk to the nurses and ask them who they recommend (several good doctors) in his field of medicine. You probably have at least one nurse you know pretty well and value her opinion. Then I'd visit his office and sit in the waiting room and strike up a conversation with some of the patients and see what is being said. If you feel comfortable with what is said make an appointment and see how you feel about your first visit with him. If he has good credenitals it is how you feel your relationship with him will be. You have to trust your doctor, and it is important to have someone good and who you like and trust. Good Luck.
