I have got both Xilisoft and IMTOO video converters. I have downloaded a movie and want to convert the .dat file into .avi. Even though both these formats are supported by the software, every time I go to convert the file, both programs display 'Fail' in the status column. Why is this???

.dat file?

http://filext.com/file-extension/DAT

Read about it, you cant convert a data file, I am not aware of that extension being used for films...

I use ImmTOO and it functions fine, I also use MP4 Converter as well as Mainconcepts MPG Encoder and have used TMPGEnc DVD converter as well as others like VirtualDUB, NanoDUB, GordianKnott suite of programs.

If the film is wrapped and uses another piece of software to convert it so you can play it, ditch it as they is forcing you to install & use spyware, download another copy of the filom that is either mpg or avi.

They keep failing because you're asking them to convert apples into oranges. It can't be done.

.dat files are data files, and .avi files are movie files.
