Poly semi means many meaning and it refers to words which though they are spelled exactly the same they can mean different things: for example
Art can mean:
the object made
a science or study of certain disciplines
a process of making
a manual verses mechanic production
etc
About removing words from the English language it is doubtful since as progress occurs there are new words invented and added to the language. It is the Job of the National Language Academies to decide which words are OK and which are not accepted. Often this conventional process, academicians have to agree, is not guided by logic, praxis, or pragmatism but by the egocentric point of views and reputations of the academy member who must agree.
Hope it helps

Polysemy means the ambiguity of an individual word or phrase that can be used (in different contexts) to express two or more different meanings. As for ur other half question....Zzzzzzzz how can u remove some words from English language???? it's a script and u modify the script with viable reasons and meanings. U form a language with some basic rules adapted from ancient times. Only the masters of that language can add or modify the present words.
For eg. People from UK and USA are both english speaking but both have a difference in the english that they speak and write , if these countries want and get some adequate reason as to why a particular word has to be omitted they wud be the ones to decide it. For eg. take into consideration ur own mother tongue...if ur country has it's origin then only ur country has teh right to do the changes to the script. But on a whole in general no script has ever removed some words just like that but with proper explanation they have modified the language and meanings. Over the years there have been many new words introduced but the old words are not forgotten but merely not used that much.

The definition of polysemy is below my answer. I would not think we would want to remove any words from the English language. Some words are not used much because they are either technical words that only people in certain fields used or they fall out of common usage because their use is over. An example would be the word "ice box;" ice boxes were probably common in my grandmother or great-grandmother's time but the word is not used much any more because we now have refrigerators. However we would not remove the word ice box from the language; I am sure some antique stores still have them.
Polysemy ([pÉËlɪsÉmɪ] or [ËpÉlɪËsÉmɪ]) (from the Greek ÏολÏ
Ïημεία = "multiple meaning") is the capacity for a sign (e.g. a word, phrase, etc.) or signs to have multiple meanings (sememes, i.e. a large semantic field). This is a pivotal concept within social sciences, such as media studies and linguistics.

poly = many
sem = sign
Words with multiple meanings.
The public education system in America is handling the second issue effectively. Through lack of knowledge, and thus disuse, words will fall out of use. When this happens, the world should mourn, for a rich resource is lost, just as when an animal species becomes extinct.
