I hope that I am not part Jewish because I know that there are certain diseases that only people of a Jewish ethnicity can get such as Gaucher disease. It is possible that it could be German or Irish blood and I was wondering if I could have a DNA test to tell for sure (to at least rule out the Jewish blood). Are these expensive?

You could find out your ancestry for sure by following your genealogy. or family tree. Investigate around. It's fun and less expensive and more accurate.

If you have the time you should look into your family tree. There are many web sites available free to help search records.(roots.web,ancestry.com) And there are some companies that do dna family name projects also, looking for families that have related ancestors. It is not as expensive for tests as you think, what the cost depends on is how many dna "markers" you want to test for.
I tried this route and the amount of info i found on my family was amazing, plus i found a far off 5th cousin in Canada!! a basic test was 123$.
look up familydnaprojects/then look up your last name on thier list.

or if you are only concerned about those certian diseases you could just be tested for them. THAT is probally more expensive.

Or just wait and see, & if you ever have symptoms of that disease, go to a university/teaching hospital, and let them do a work-up on you.

There are some companies (whose names I dont know offhand) that will take a DNA sample and analyze it, thus telling you your ancestry.
