Take it to a RESCUE shelter, not a pound. Rescue shelters will only ever ethuanize an animal if it is terminally ill. They will keep her/get her healthy and take care of her until they can find her a new home. If you live in
Australia take her to the closest RSPCA, otherwise do some research and find some rescue shelters.

We feed the strays here. I go through an 18 pound bag of dry cat food once a month, it's only $8 and it keeps the local cats fed. There's a water bowl outside too, which they use all the time.

Are you sure it's a stray ?
Look in your local shops etc to see if anyone is putting up posters about a missing cat. If it's young or un-neutered it may have simply wandered out of it's area and not know the way home.
Personally I'd probably take it in myself ( but that's me !) If that's impossible and you're in the UK try contacting the cat's protection league
http://www.cats.org.uk/
or look on this site for a rescue center near you

Piggie, RSPCA in some parts of Aus will more than likely euth the cat after it has done it's eight days in the pound area. Specially if they have lots of cats
Go to a recognized shelter/pound that will, so long as it healthy, keep until it can be re homed.

Hi i started off with one stray cat twix, then came milliecat, then came spike, then came jasper then kiki and last but not least scruff arrived, i think my cats advertise the fact that im a soft touch, i agree with the other people try a good rescue centre, i live in the uk most of our rescue centres have a waiting list, have u tryed putting up posters and asking neighbours ringing the local vets and local shelters to see if he has been reported lost. if u take him to the vets they will check if he is chipped. good luck jackie and the housefull.

if you cant take it in... bring it to a cat rescue... they treat the cats better than at a pound... also you can check up on the cat to see if it finds a good home soon... hope this helps.

There are NO KILL shelters but they usually have a waiting list. - I have a little stray that hangs around my house now- I took her and got her fixed first thing- I just put food outside now- she is not allowed indoors with my others- it makes me feel bad but I can't have any more either.

Look on the internet & find a CERTIFIED pet rescue. Most times they will take the animal & find a home for it. I had a small dog that was let off at my house, I contacted small dog rescue, or something like that & the dog had a GOOD HOME within the week.
