Relax, it is just a figure of speech. If you spoke a different language you would use different swear words about different things.

The numinous? I feel a great deal of wonder and awe but to pretend that amounts to believing in an actual 'being' who is responsible for it - I just don't buy that. The universe runs on physical laws. If all god was gonna do was set them up (that probably didnt need to be done anyway, there are far more sensible explanations) he might as well not bother to exist at all - oh wait...

The best I can come up with is the generic definition of an idol. Whatever is most important in your life is your "god."

Well, how about this one:

"Oh MY Universal Cohesive Unifying Force Who Is Probably Only Duct Tape!!!!"

(too long?)

it doesn't change the definition, it's still a mythical being who supposedly created the universe. you are jsut using it as an expostulation instead of a benediction.

I simply mean it as an expression of frustration/surprise/annoyance etc

I would also say "f**k me" but Id on't mean that as an invitation to do so

Sure. spell it backward. Makes as much sense as an atheist saying, "Oh, my God." (MY?)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You need to find a different word. God belongs to the believers. It's copyrighted. You can't have it.
