She is temporarily staying at a house with three other cats, and has been here for a couple of weeks. I caught her settled IN the box, hanging out there, and there was even a poop buried in the litter at the time. She is a little cat, and deaf, but big in spirit and isn't usually intimidated by the others. I have never seen a cat act this way. She left soon after I saw her, but I don't know if that was just because I disturbed her.

I have had this happen with my cats. The problem was either a urinary tract infection, and the cat stayed in the box because it felt the urge to urinate all the time,or the cat had fleas, and it's skin was irritated.I have no clue as to why hiding in the litterbox would help with fleas, but that's what they did.Antibiotics for the UTI and flea treatments and a cortisone shot for the skin problems had them out of the box and back to normal in few days.My brother's cat has skin allergies and "lives" on the windowsill when they flare up,so when he takes her to the vet for a shot, she's better in a few days, too. So,you might just want to have the cat checked over for either of those problems,or,you might just have a weird cat,LOL! Good luck. Oh,I have a deaf cat,too and he does some very strange things.Today,I knew I heard him crying, but I coudn't find him.I went to get something out of the cupboard and there he was, laying on the dishes! Of course they had to be washed, then.Crazy cat!

Cats are very territorial and SHE doesn't know her stay is temporary. She's coping with a new environment and the enormous stress of trying to find her place in a territory that is already divided up between the other cats. It's not that she can't hold her own...think of how you'd feel if you were suddenly dropped into a brand new job that you didn't have skills for and no one bothered to train you for. That's her new life.

My cat does the same thing for some reason lol im not exactly sure why but she seems to do it cause the other cats want to use it....almost like shes protecting it. But maybe its due to the new environment

The only time I have seen this is when a cat is confined to a cage at shelter. Try providing a blanket or sweater that smells like your for her to lay on she's probably stressed.
