If an unbeliever dies without Jesus they are punished to burn in hell for eternity. My question is: When Jesus died on the cross for our sins how come he didn't spend eternity in hell? Any responses with biblical refrences would be appreciated.

I'm sorry I don't have much time here to search specific references but I did want to help if I can.

If you read Romans you will get your answer. The law's demand was death. In Adam (The first man) All died. All of us born of woman are born with original sin, what that means is you are born a sinner just by virtue of being born of the seed of Adam. But in Christ (The Promised Seed) the many are made alive. You see we can all die and go to hell but only God can die and rise again because nothing is impossible with Him. Seeing that Christ died and rose again death has no power over Him. The Christian, being placed into Christ by Baptism (Rom 6) was placed into His death so that he to (the Christian) may walk in newness of life, having the promise of eternal life in Christ.

It is not needful for Jesus to spend an eternity in Hell for you it is enough that the eternal one died for you and rose again that you may have life in His name.

The good news isn't that Jesus paid your fines, as it were, though that is certainly part of it but the good news is that we were reconciled to God through the body of Christ. You who were ones aliens and strangers of the promise have been brought nigh through the blood of a better covenant that speaks better things that that of Able. It speaks of Mercy!

You have come to a Mercy seat but when you got there you did not just find mercy but a whole thrown of Grace.

Jesus did not just pay your sin, He became your sin. For he who know no sin was MADE sin that you might be MADE the righteousness of God in HIM.

Unlike these other guys, I get your question. Here's the answer.

When we go to hell for our sins it is to "pay" the consequences. Unfortunately, because we ourselves are sinners, we aren't worthy sacrifices for our own sin. It's like if a burger costs a dollar and all you have is a dime, it doesn't matter how long you let the dime sit on the counter, it isn't going to pay for the burger.

Jesus on the other hand was sinless. Because of that he was able to satisfy God's wrath completely and there was no need for him to hang around. It's as if Warren Buffet wanted to buy a bicycle. He's got almost an infinite amount of money so there's not going to be any wasted time filling out credit applications or bouncing a check.

It just says that He was in Hell for three days. He went there to preach the Gospel of salvation through Him. You see, they died before Christ was born and didn't get a chance to hear the " good news" ( the Gospel). Then many believed upon Christ and were saved. People are sent to hell because they sinned and didn't believe in Christ. People don't burn in hell for eternity , they are turned to ashes and are GONE for eternity. That is what is meant. Christ wasn't sent to hell for punishment, He went there to teach and save.

Simple. Jesus took our sins upon Himself when He died and paid our penalty for our sins, which is separation from the Father. God could not look upon sin, so Jesus called out in anguish to The Father "My God, why have you forsaken Me?" BUT, Jesus did not become and never was a sinner!!

For one brief moment He was separated from the Father. Never happened before, won't happen again.

He became THE perfect sacrifice. Offerings before Calvary were made all of the time to pay for sins, but His was a one time payment for all past, present, and future sins.

Hell was created for Satan and his angles, not God and humans. Jesus is God so that obviously won't happen.

As for humans, God only sends people who choose to go their willingly.
I believe when the bible talks about hell and the worm that never dies, it is referring to the fact that, in hell, the person will realize how simple grace was and why he or she was so "stupid" (for lack of better terms) to not accept His simple, free gift. This will torment them for E-T-E-R-N-I-T-Y-!!!!!!!!

Jesus didnt die without Himself for the first thing.

Jesus' Father God reurrected Jesus from the dead and gave Him eternal life.

Jesus took all sin to the grave whereupon He defeated death and arose leaving the sins of all believers behind.

You need to read the Bible for the whole story. You sound very spiritually sick.

Jesus was a great Messenger and Prophet of God. God says in Quran that Jesus didn't even die on cross. He was taken alive to Heaven and will stay there until God will send him back to this world to establish peace here.

Would you really call Jesus an unbeliever? How is that possible? He would have to not believe in himself. He is God. He made repeated claims of being God, and he rose from the dead. Your question doesn't make sense.

On Earth as it is in Heaven. Rank has its privileges, the rich and powerful don't have to spend much time in jail here either.

well, he did go to hell, but it was to teach, not to suffer... he suffered our sins in this life, and therefore did not need to suffer them in eternity...

ps... fyi... "Eternal" is another name for God, so "Eternal suffering" is just another way of saying that we'll suffer god's judgements, not that we will suffer forever and ever
