They have nothing to do with one another. a person is moral because of the values and lessons they were taught as a child. though my family is "jewish", all four of my grandparents are proud atheists, my father died an atheist, my mother is an agnostic. i myself don't believe in god, and i don't believe that the religious fanatics should try to tell me that the only reason to be good is so god will smile down upon me. to need stipulation to be a decent human being is upsetting, why can't we just accept one another despite what we believe, and treat everyone with the respect they deserve? i'm sure someone will say something so absurd ill have to add more to this, so stay tuned

i had no religion in my home, but i don't need the threat of "fire and brimstone" to be true to myself. i don't steal, cheat, or kill because my parents were good people, and their parents were good people.

hey lilbitofky, as much as i appreciate your level-headed response, i must say i rather believe in what i know is right than dilude myself to give myself "hope." i envy those who can believe their good behavior will land them on a cloud, it is a fantastic notion. but if i am wrong, and there is a god, and the moral life i have lived isn't enough to get me into heaven, then screw him. your actions should factor in far more than what you just happen to believe in. if thats the case though, i think billy joel said it best..."i rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints."

ME! I'm tired of both sides being so zealot in their beliefs. Over zealot atheists are just as bad as over zealot followers.

"They have nothing to do with one another. a person is moral because of the values and lessons they were taught as a child."
Actually, no, a person is moral because he acts moral. But I'd agree that in order for it to be effective in most cases, it would have to be taught.
But here is something that I think you (and maybe the "fanatics" who irk you) miss. A religious view is not that it is impossible for an atheist to be moral. the religious view is that all morality ultimately stems from G-d. Thus, the religious view is that G-d created man with the innate sense of what morals are (e.g. that it is wrong to murder someone). The difference between a moral religious person and a moral atheist is that the religious person says that the morals come from G-d while the atheist will say they come from man.
That being the case, I would tell you not to concern yourself with religious fanaticism but rather with the arguments put forth by reasonable, non fanatical people (and there are plenty of those) who are religious and do believe that morality stems from G-d. Unless, of course, you think all religious people are fanatical, which in that case, you are no better.

I don't remember it ever being claimed in the bible that only believing in god brings morality.
It would make more sense to say that since we are supposedly all sons of god (In a christian viewpoint) that we all already have moral value inside each and every one of us.
Whenever a christian does make that claim I just know he's trying to ride on his high horse. While all the time thinking he's coming from an indisputable position because of his faith. Totally ignorant and conceited.

If you think about it just a little, 'believing' only to attain heaven or avoid hell is an infantile, craven version of morality, and insulting to humanity. It's the 'morality' of a baby in a crib or a muslim suicide bomber, doing what he does for purely selfish reasons and nothing more. The baby can be excused but the bomber cannot!

Actually, the moral argument would stem from people with religion or a belief in god because most of them think that Atheists are immoral.
I'm with you pal.
For that you get a star! SALUTE!!!

That is sad you don't believe in anything huh? Not much to look forward to but the dirt huh?
Let me just say this this conversation will never be over because Christian people are always going to want others to go to heaven if you believed in God and Heaven wouldn't you want to keep people from going to hell?
I'll accept you for who you are but if just by chance I was right and you were wrong wouldn't you wish that you would have listened to a christian.
If I were wrong and you were right I have nothing to fear or look forward to, so theres not much to think about for me......
Be happy though in what ever you choose! I believe that people can be nice and generally okay people even if they are not a christian. It doesn't make you a horrible person.
Okay I'm ready for you to add to yours! GOD Bless YOU!
Okay first let me say that I am not here to tell anybody anything they don't want to know (if you want to know how ask )
second you have the right to choose your belief I am not trying to force you to believe anything that you don't choose to believe..... That is one of the awesome things about it you have a choice what you believe. I wasn't trying to make you mad or anything..... I hope that wasn't the effect I had on you
and lastly if you look at the comments on this subject. and see the anger look where it's coming from it's not me.
I choose what I want to believe and I don't need to defend myself. I don't feel the need, and I am not asking you to defend your point of view (It's your choice isn't that awesome)
It's your business and your right to believe whatsoever you choose again It's been a pleasure!
I think your right though there should not be any arguements on this subject because no one is going to come out of it right,if their right is in anger.... there isn't a right in anger!
To all of those angry answers I sure didn't mean to ruffle any feathers! lol You guys are harsh aren't you! lololololol Have a Blessed night!

We do issues in yet in a various way from you, yet come on, all of us understand who we are worshipping. 2) in certainty any of the anti-evolution retoric. Evolution is solidly scientific. This incredibly bothers me from so referred to as non secular people via fact it incredibly is like their saying "properly, i do no longer understand this, it does not extra healthful into my attitude, so there is not any way that God ought to've completed it. i understand all of His barriers and if it incredibly is too complicated for me, it must be too complicated for Him." So insulting! 3) The athiest arguements that attempt to apply technological know-how to disprove God. technological know-how and faith serve 2 diverse applications. technological know-how asks "how" and faith asks "why". lots of the astonishing evolutionary scientists are theists, there is not any longer a conflict, yet via fact of that technological know-how won't disprove God. i do no longer even open those questions. i think of i've got now indignant each team in this communicate board. My artwork this is finished ; )

People who make that argument generally make it because they need to have a reason to hold onto their own irrational beliefs. Kinda like when people point the finger and make excuses even when they know they're wrong. (enjoy the videos)
