Wrap an ice pack in a pillow cover. The material is thin so you still get the cold but not the damage to the skin with the direct contact of the package.
Also, I recommend a bag of frozen peas. Buy a couple of them and alternate them out. As one thaws, have the other one freezing. Frozen peas can form better to the curves of your face and do the same job the way a hard ice pack can't.
Alternate 15 minutes on and 30 minutes off. Take some Ibuprofen (Motrin) do decrease the swelling. I promise you, don't drink anything through a staw for as least two or three weeks. While the blood clot in the sockets where your teeth were are forming, the pressure from the sucking through a straw can dislodge it and/or prevent it from forming. Dry socket is the most painful thing ever. Don't smoke either.

for whatever reason i didn't swell much when mine were taken out. didn't they give you an Rx? if they didn't, take some advil every few hours, that'll help a lot. don't leave the ice pack on for more than an hour at a time, and make sure you have a cloth between your mouth and the ice. the ice doesn't really do anything other than numb the outside of the mouth, the nerve that really hurts is further in.

Great answer from Lynn. I would just add DO NOT DRINK CARBONATED BEVERAGES!! They can "boil" out the blood clot also. If you alternate the cold pack, (we recommended 15-20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) with some moist heat, it will feel even better. good luck

I wish I could help you. I had oral surgery to get mine pulled, because they had to come out immediately and only 2 were actually all the way in and had no bad side effects after it. I would call a nurse and ask them, you can always call the ER and ask to talk to a nurse in a non-emergency situation, or look to see if there are any 24 hour dentists in your area and call them.

take advil or something and leave the ice pack on for 10-15 minutes, or less if it gets too cold, if it does get a cool wet rag
