Is there a certain time of day that he's crankier? When my 9 year old gets home from school, he needs a snack pretty quickly or his temper flares, so it could be that. Or maybe he could use a little more sleep - is he VERY active during the day? You could try to start your bedtime routine a little earlier each night. Maybe he's getting too much sugar during the day and is "crashing". Without more information, it's hard to determine what the cause may be and also what the solution may be. Best of luck to you :o)

My 5yr old daughter is always cranky with me for something! Usually its because I have made he stop doing something like drawing, puzzle etc...and make her tidy her room or brush her teeth or have a bath and now what I do is say
"Eliza its 5 mins to bath time so you can finish that picture and then we'll run the bath together. Would you like bubble bath today/a certain toy to play with in the bath?" This usually calms her and stops her being cranky as she has some control but I have the final say. Also asking her to help me with the washing and cooking helps as its fun and different. Also I think maybe 9hrs of sleep isn't enough for a 5 yr old. My kids go to bed at 7.30pm and wake about 6-6.30 and have a nap or quiet time in the afternoon. This way they are getting closer to the recommended sleep of 12-14 hrs a day.

Try just spending quality time outdoors kicking a ball, playing backyard cricket as they respond so well to it. The also run off energy and are more prone to sleeping better because of it. His diet could also play a part in his mood. Healthy fruits and vegies, grains and nuts and fish and plenty of water will keep his energy level higher and therefore he's less tired and cranky.

He could just be going through a phase and you may need to give him space but make sure he is having heaps of one on one attention.

He could be getting too much sleep. My 6 year gets between 8-9 hours of sleep each night but sometimes he gets the same way if he gets too much. Try adjusting his bedtime and getting him up alittle earlier in the morning. He might also take a nap at school if he attends and this could be contributing too.

Believe it or not your son might be bored! I have a 5 year old as well and he gets very bored sometimes, a great thing to do is take him to a play ground and let me run around and be a kid, also physical activity is great for you and your son to do together! Ride bikes to the park, I know this sounds corny but it works. Also find out who some of his friends are at school and let them come over and have a play date, on the weekend. One thing I give my son, not only because he is autistic but because its good for his body is omega 3 oil, I put it in my sons drink and he doesn't even notice, its perfectly safe. They sell this for children in a cherry flavor at whole foods. This will help with his overall health.

Try cutting all the fake food out of his diet. You know anything that you can't pronounce or find in nature. Amazing what happens when kids quit being feed chemicals.

Well I hope you're not letting him get away with this behavier, or it'll go on forever until he learns.
Get him in the bath (if he needs one) at 7, and in bed by 8, unless his bedtime is earlier.

what does he do? I can't help you if I don't know what he's doing (cranky is a very broad term).

So is mine. Deal with it and keep loving him. You could try asking him if something is bothering him, I had some success with my son when I went that route.
