Since it's a big wedding and most likely formal, I would go with something classy. Since it's Chicago, it's a major city. They are more foward with certain wedding fashions. I think a black cocktail dress will be acceptable. Especially if the wedding is in the late afternoon into the evening.
If you are going with your boyfriend to the wedding, then he is responsible for the gift. You are the guest. If you want to contribute, then you two should do it together. You are not expected to give a seperate gift.

Any color would be fine. Just steer clear of white or ivory.. these are colors normally reserved for the bride. Also,if you know the color of the bridesmaids dresses, you may not want to get the same color as them (unless they are wearing black).. During the day, you may want to stay away from deep rich tones, but for night I feel anything goes. I just went to a wedding and wore a dress that I acually bought from Davids bridal. I called it 'tinkerbell green' but I cannot wait to wear it again!! I got more compliments on this dress!!! Even the waitstaff and several bidesmaids were telling me how great it looked! I am a bit curvy and it was soo comfy..It also will travel well. If you get any wrinkles, several minutes in a steamy bathroom will get them right out!
As for the gift.. as impersonal as it sounds, I don't know a bride or groom alive that would not welcome (and actually prefer) cash! And it is totally easy for you to carry!! If you still want to get a gift, you could purchase something off their registry and have it shipped to their home. You can then put an insert from the store in a card telling them a gift is on the way to them and what it is. Most stores will provide this type of insert for you. Another idea, depending on how well you know them.. if you know where they are going on their honeymoon, you could call the hotel and set up a couples' massage for them or have a spa gift certificate in the room when they get there along with a bottle of wine and cheese tray or strawberries and champagne...
Hope this helps a little bit....

Nothing white or black!!! Nothing too revealing or anything that will upstage the bride or bridesmaids dresses. Try and find out what colour the Bm's are wearing so you know what to stay away from. Keep if comfy and relaxed with good shoes!!! Try looking in little boutique type stores as you can usually always find something different there. And make sure to set a budget and stick to it or you'll buy a $200 dress and never wear it again.
And for a portable gift....money? If not money then mongramed towels, sheets, gift vouchers, picture frames for the wedding pics.
P.s one of my friends wore a really really low cut short black dress to my wedding last year with her **** nearly hanging out and every man in the room couldn't stop staring at her (including my new husband!!) and I was so pissed off. So don't do that!!

I saw this dress at anntaylor website and it looks pretty. It has 2 different colors. I think Blue is in fashion right now. Since you are flying to Chicago from California you might want to think something small for the gift. Maybe you can get some gift card, or cashier check.

there are so many cute summer dresses out right now...especially ones on sale since summer is almost over...i would suggest just getting one of them...but since it's the beginning of september it may be a little chilly so you might want to get a cute sweater to wear over it. but you aren't supposed to wear white or black to a wedding...so keep that in mind. and as far as a gift...you could always find out where the couple likes to shop or pick a store with housing needs and just get them a gift card. hope that helps!

Wear any dress that you would like....its the colors that you must watch for. NOT WHITE DRESSES!!! and no dresses that are really bright.....basically, nothing that will take attention from the bride....its her day! If you dont want to take a gift with you on the plane you could order it online but have it shipped to them......
