Set off some of those flea bombs that you get at any store. Then every night for a week fill up pots of hot water, not boiling but as hot as the tap will go and set them through out the house at night when you go to bed. The fleas run for the heat, jump in and die. The hot water doesn't help with the eggs but the flea bomb will. The hot water will just kill any fleas that are remaining so they don't start to repopulate.
The best thing to do at the same time is to get your cat or cats Advantage. Yes its kinda expensive but well worth the price to stay flea free.

1. vacuum... especially where flea eggs fall and where the larvae pupate. Get all folds of fabric, under cushions, under furniture, crevices. Launder things if you can't vacuum and the cat sleeps there.
2. Thoroughly brush and then spot-on treat the animals using a reputable monthly product (Frontline, Advantage, Revolution from a vet). It runs about $12-16 a dose if I recall correctly. That's less than $20 a month (one package is 3 or 6 months' worth). This is BY FAR the easiest pesticide to use, that will do you the most good.
Don't get "bombs" from the drugstore. They don't work well, are inconvenient to use, and are pretty toxic. If you need to spray the house even after regular vacuuming, get a mild product that has a residue that kills larvae and eggs - and spray it selectively in areas where it's needed. I pay about $25-30 for a can that covers about 2000 square feet at my vet.

You can either have the easiest way, or the cheapest. You can't have both.
What you really want is the most effective way.
There are treatments at the pet store next to other flea treatment products. You sprinkle them into your carpets, let them kill the fleas, and then you vacuum them up. You have to wash all the bedding in the house. You have to vacuum everyday, over and over, until all the fleas are gone. If it is really bad, you may have to "bomb" the house and smoke all the fleas out. Worst case scenario, talk to an exterminator. Getting rid of fleas can be complected and not always easy or cheap.
The best strategy is preventing fleas in the first place.

You'll need to get it sprayed and cleaned a couple of times because their eggs stay dormant for a long time and you can get a few hatches of different time frames. So its perseverance and chemical treatment. Get flea collars for pets for a start. Vacuum several times a week as well.

A $10 dose of Advantage or Frontline from the vets, and let the fleas die out from that.
Turn your dehumidifier on to kill any eggs (they shrivel up and die in dry air).
