They may be intelligent, but come on....this is the NY Times op/ed section we're talking about. Not Scientific American.
Let's keep some perspective here, shall we?

Trying to put words in our mouths. No. I'm not saying they are stupid. I'm saying the typical groundpounder doesn't have access to what is happening all over the battlefield or country. Do privates have access to what generals do. Can privates issue orders like generals. No. I am sure they are very intelligent, but what they see is in a small area. Not everywhere in Iraq are people dying and attacks being made.

It really depends on how many they had to interview to find that seven.
There's a big difference between being "stupid" and being "incorrect" and "being a liar."
If the media that presented these seven didn't tell you that they interviewed seven hundred to find them, they are liars.
More than likely these seven believe what they are saying, but might be incorrect.
Anyone that trusts the media is stupid. Oh, how's that impeachment of Bush coming along? And the recounts in Florida that will show Gore was really the winner? And the investigation into Republican vote fraud in Ohio? How many drowned polar bears are being found on the shores in Alaska each week? Has Key Largo been flooded by the rising oceans due to global warming yet?

Making any progress? Yes we are. Process that's not fast enough for people like you? You bet your ***.
Soldiers should be intelligent, and be able to think for themselves. If not, we'd have formations where the soldiers keep marching forwards in a line to be slaughtered. If each individual soldier thinks for himself and creates hell for the enemy, then you've got progress. If every soldier is smart, then if their CO is killed one can take right over where the now dead CO left off, eliminating chaos and confusion amoungst our own ranks.

Soldiers are generaly stupid, yes. The average age of a soldier is what, 19-21? Nineteen to twenty-one year olds are, to be kind, ignorant (not necessarily stupid). Anyone who would base his political/geo-political strategem on the advice of a 20 year old is as stupid as him. Soldiers don't know jack about why they are there or what they have accomplished. They are kids. Their opinions mean nothing.
Twenty years ago, I was an ignorant, 20-something soldier. I didn't know anything except what I was told.

they was stupit for telling thier real names is all i think.... they was on the up and up... i think the only way to make progress would be to start on one side of a town and take everything that one could use to make any bombs or to shoot anyone with.... and shoot anyone that dont like it... should be no cars drove on some streets and trucks on another if they cant get where they need they walk if they blow it up then it stay just like that a mess that street no longer a street but a side walk
