Bessy, I assume you are required to wear a close-toed shoe.
Go to a store that has a number of brands and widths. Look for a shoe that is fairly flat, with a thick sole, maybe 1/2".
If a wider shoe fits better, get the wide.
Today many of the athletic shoes are labled for walking or running or "cross-trainer" (meaning multiple positions and directions such as a tennis player would do)
The proper way to fit a shoe is from your heel to the ball of the foot -- it should fit back into the heel of the shoe, and the ball of your foot should fit across the widest part of the shoe. In all, it is important that your toes do not touch the end of your shoe as you walk (this can cause toe crowding and cause problems for you) When you do try on a shoe, and you are narrowing the choice down from 2 or 3, take your time. Try on both shoes (no one has 2 feet the same size).
Stand, walk, squat, and maybe even take a few running steps. My suggestion would be to keep it on your foot about 5 minutes as you notice where it feels best and where it does not. Readjust the laces and retie the shoes during this time.
Make sure you are satisfied with your selection before leaving the store. -- When you get home, try the shoes on again, wear them on clean carpet only. Stand and walk for about 20 minutes (do some ironing or something similar)
This will be a better test for the shoes to verify it was a good fit and a good purchase. If you are not satisfied, before wearing the shoes off the carpet, pack them back in the box for a return. (The store is not allowed to take back shoes that have marks on the sole or if the tags have been removed)
If possible, buy 2 different styles of shoes. Switch-off during the week, your feet will be happier.

I find that Filas work pretty good, for a matter of fact i hiked a long way and had them for three years now, they are dead right now but they lasted me a long time, i wore them everywhere cause i had no other comfortable shoes to wear and a pair that i could get dirty cause i used to wear them before and after work, i used to work in a truck shop. I never used to work with them, of course i used to wear steal toes. I love Filas, Nike is good too but they don't really last that long with me,walking pretty much everywhere just don't cut it for them. So go with Filas.

I have problems with my feet and the New Balance with the rollbar is awesome - I've tried Asics, Nike etc. and these are the only ones that work. They are walking shoes - make sure you get the ones with the rollbar.
