ok so I understand there are the 10 commandments and breaking one of them is considered a sin. Yet some people define drinking, fighting, cusing, gambling, sex, etc as sins. Where are these other sins defined. Also, how do I know if something I am going to do is sinful?

As a being who is constantly tempted by evil, is it possible my judgement could be wrong. A lot of you are saying I should trust my judgement and If I think something is a sin, it probably is. If repenting my sins is a major part of the christian faith, shouldn't I be a little leary of trusting my judgement

Sin is breaking God law . or his commandment's going contrary to the will of god. there are 3 kinds of sin's omission commission and secret's sin; most people don't talk about the sin that theyt hide in their hearth and is called secret's sin; the bible tells us to confest these sin daily as much as 7 times a day; and that god will forgive our sin of omission. commission and secret's sin if we confest them he is able faithful and just to forgive and clean us from all un-righteousness. sin is not only breaking god law and be disobedient is't the daily perpost ing in your heart to do evil things . rebelliousness by going contrary to the will of god rom;;3 and 10 There is none righteous no not one. but the goodness and love that god show towarsd us even yet in sin jesus died for all and made it posible for repentance forgiveness and salvation. the bible said that, our spirit is willing but our flesh is so week . god knows all of these things about us he made us and he remember that we lived in the natural man . so god is saying that he will also take these yokes away which he also called bondage and when he does this god said don't go back to them againt. so please don't beat your self up like that read the bible and try to understand it . yes god hated sin he tells us in his words i hated sin but i love sinners!!!. .so what we shoul do as christian's dont enter into temptation pray and ask god to help us not to fall into temptation , and god said he looks at our inward and not at our outward. god has already forgiving our trangression's and our iniquity he said it and he is not a lair.and about other sin god said a sin is a sin no matter wish one you commit and all of your sin are forgiven except one and it's don't ever sin against the holy spirits because god will never forgived you ,neither in this life nor in the next life. in closure the ket thing is christ died for sinners because he loves us and he will deliver us from the dominion of sin by bringing us under the constraint of love. love is born of love and whrre love is in command the pride and self .centeredness and disobedience which are the essence of sin caan no longer continue, the bible sets the reign of love over against the reign of sin. and sees jesus christ as god's supreme means for crating love

OK, you said "Yet some people define drinking, fighting, cusing, gambling, sex, etc as sins" let me help you with this
One of the commandments "Love one another", if you loved the people around you, then you wouldn't curse at them and fight them
Sex is not a sin, it's the context it is preformed in, sex out side of marriage is called adultery, and one of the commandments also says "Do not commit adultery"
You are allowed to drink, but, the bible teaches not to get drunk with alcohol. So, hence a sin.
regarding knowing if something you are going to do is sinful, usually you will have a feeling that something you are going to do is wrong, but you sometimes do it anyway cause you want to.
To have a clear definition, do some more study into the 10 commandments. Things like "You shale have no other gods before me" a commandment, entails that anything you have, you should not desire or worship more then God, if say you want money for 1 hour a day, but you only want God for 1 hour on Sunday, then you obviously worship money more then God.
I'm not saying I've never done these things, just answering your question.
Also, we are told that doing anything God asked us not to do, or not doing things God asked us to do is also defined as sin
If you'd like some more description on how to determine if something is sinful, feel free to e-mail me.

An evil act. Evil thoughts are also sometimes thought of as sin, because they perpetuate evil acts such as "premeditation" or plotting to do evil acts. The New Testament tells us to Love God and Love Thy Neighbor and in this is contained most of the laws of the prophets (Ten Commandments) since the original ten focus on devotion to God and respect for others. What constitutes an evil act? That which does harm to oneself or others. Whether we realize this is the case at the time or not is not a prerequisite. There are sins of omission (not doing that which is right in the first place/hurting another unintentionally). God is the judge of the nature of the sin, since only God can know the heart of a person. Some may lie to protect the innocent, kill to protect home and country, steal because they are starving.

A sin is knowing that something is against God's will and you do it anyway. Repeated willful sinning is iniquity and may cause personality disruption and extinction. If you do wrong and don't know that this is not God's will, that is error and evil, not willful sin -- less serious.
Anything that harms another or hurts your mind or body is a sin. There are many thousands of sins, not just ten.
Any sex outside of marriage that does not co-create more sons of God (Children) is a sin. Count the costs !

Actually there are more than 10 commandments, but they are a vital part of the gospel. Obedience to these commandments paves the way for obedience to other gospel principles.
As for the definition of sin:
To commit sin is to willfully disobey God's commandments or to fail to act righteously despite a knowledge of the truth (see James 4:17).
The Lord has said that He "cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance." Sin results in the withdrawal of the Holy Ghost. It makes the one who sins unable to dwell in the presence of Heavenly Father, for "no unclean thing can dwell with God." .
Other than Jesus Christ, each person who has ever lived on earth has broken commandments or failed to act according to knowledge of the truth. The Apostle John taught: "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, [Jesus Christ] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:8–9). Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, each person can repent and be forgiven of these sins.

you should know right from wrong if you do then you will know what is considered a sin. A normal sin and a mortal sin are not the same thing, a normal sin would be along the lines of lying to someone a mortal sin commiting a murder or suicide.

This is like asking a vegetarian to define "steak sauce". I define "sin" the same way other people do: an act that goes against the tenets of a given religion. And of course, only the severely short-sighted and stupid would think anybody who doesn't subscribe to the idea of "sin" is automatically a reckless hedonist. Self-responsibility is a universal concept.

If it is at all possible that in doing something that you are going to grow in knowledge and wisdom and know more than what you knew before then it most likely must be a sin

I define sin as anything that hurts someone else. If you look at the commandments, every one of them (in those days) stood to hurt someone if committed. You are included in the someone else, because you are one of God's children and to hurt yourself is disrespectful and therefore sinful.

Anything that takes your focus away from God or the word of God is a sin. Anything that distracts you from His will is a sin. Anything that causes you to be impure.....
Listen to your instincts. This is God's way of communicating with you through your soul trying to guide you. All we have to do is listen...
All sin stems from breaking those commandments. So they are connected.
Trust your intsticts. Really pay attention. Pray that God will guide you in the right direction.
You make a decision and still be wrong because you are still human, prone to making mistakes. But listening to your true instincts will never lead you in the wrong direction....Trust God and you will trust yourself.....
Eating, sleeping, going to school, etc. These things can lead to sin but are not sinful in and of themselves. For example, God does not want us to put anything impure into our bodies. So if you eat something that is impure to your body, it is a sin because you are seperating yourself from the divine presence.
Going to school is not sinful in and of itself. However, getting caught up in the gossip and drama in school can be. Lieing to teachers about work, not doing what you are supposed to be doing in school, chasing the opposite sex (or same sex if that is your preference). Drinking puts impurities into your body and makes you susceptable to sin. Fighting is wrong. God wants our speech to be clean. Gamblig leads to various emotions, lies, drinking, etc.
It is all connected.
