If it is a way to try and be thankful for the things one does have in life. . then I don't see the harm in that context.

It is not about being time efficient. It is about being thankful for everything God has given you. It is a matter of respect. Telling the One who created all things that you thank Him for everything. That you know without Him, nothing would be here. We pray at the dinner table because we are thankful to have shelter and food. We are thankful to be surrounded by family. We are thankful for being able to live another day.
We pray before we go to bed to tell God thanks.
Praying is not just talking. It is not just empty words. It is communication. There is no right or wrong way. It is the same principle as telling your mother or father thanks for working all those years to put you through college. Or to help you get that car you always wanted.
It is about carrying on an intimate relationship with the One who made all things and being truly thankful for everything.
It is also about asking for blessings. Blessings for good health and family. Good times.

Well when a person prays at the dinner table or when ever they eat, they are thanking God for allowing them the receive nourishment for their body to function. When a person prays before they go to bed They are thanking God for allowing them to live another day and if they should happen to pass away in their sleep they are asking the Lord to keep their soul. So they are thanking the Lord for food at the table and for life (including everlasting) if they are not blessed with awaking the next day.

Well the idea is to thank God for the food and to bless it to our good. People pray at different time, not just at meals and at bed time. Many of us pray lots of times during the day. In fact God says that we should "pray without ceasing" which might mean to continually pray, like every day, but some interpret as meaning, pray at all times. I prefer the latter interpretation.

We are following the example of Jesus when we pray and the guidance of the Bible
1Th 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
Luk 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
Luk 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
Rom 12:12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Col 4:2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
Peace be with you

Prayer is communication with the divine. The divine doesn't have to be "out there" or "up there." It is in you. So getting in touch with that very holy entitiy or force what some call God and others call Allah, this is good to do as often as possible. In traditions of the Book as Moslems call the Bible, folk prayed at least five times a day.
So too, Christians had different times to pray during the four and twenty hours. Many Christian monks still pray as they have for centuries, that is: at about three in the morning, at dawn, at mid-day, at sunset, and at night before going to sleep.
Other times to pray can be when one thanks God, when one asks for help (petition), or when one just wants to converse, like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Thanking God for the meal is only natural, if you believe He (She) made it possible for you to eat.

We pray before meals in order to thank God for providing us with food. And you don't pray to be time efficient you pray to thank God for things that He did in your life, and you speak to Him like a Father

I think partially because that is how they were raised. The other is because the food is provided for by God through all that has been given to us and that is a way to be thankful. It is also a time to teach our children how to pray. When we pray at dinner, it isn't just a thanks for the food, but those who made it and for other things in the day. God tells us to be thankful in everything, and well, let's face it, food is needed and it is an important part of our day.

Because they are thanking God for the blessings of the food on the table. It's not about efficiency, it's about praying when they feel they should.

I don't always pray before I go to sleep...I just pray whenever I feel like it.
I do pray before I eat, though...just to thank God for providing me with food.

Lol. This is funny. We pray to thank God for blessing us with our meals. We don't aim for efficiency. Praying isn't like a job or a task that has some specific product that is to be achieved, its something you do our of devotion. Oh, and btw, I don't pray before going to bed necessarily, I just do it when it strikes me.
