In the army, 1 person = 1 troop, 8-12 troops = a squad, 2-4 squads = a platoon...........

A troop is one solider. If on the news you hear there are X number of troops in Iraq, that is how many military members are in Iraq.
I've been told troop is more of an army term, but some say the marines use it too.
In the army, 1 person = 1 troop, 8-12 troops = a squad, 2-4 squads = a platoon, and it grows more and more from there.

A troop, a battery, and a company are all the same, just for future reference:) A troop is for cavalry, a battery is for artillery, and a company is pretty much everything else. They range in size, anywhere from 30 people to 300+ people, depending on the type of unit and whatnot. For example, my 3 different units, 4 different companies: my first unit I was in a company with 250 people, second company with 30 people, third company with 140 people, and now in a company with 80 people. The way it works is you have a soldier first, then you have a squad (usually between 5-10 soldiers), then a platoon (usually 4 squads), then a company (usually 3-4 platoons), then a battalion (usually 4 companies), then a brigade (usually 5-6 battalions), then a division (usually 3-4 brigades), and then a corps.........shall i keep going lol!!!! Hope I answered your question!

At least 3 platoons of men. Troop is a CALVERY designation. Otherwise it is just a company.
