It is when surgeon cuts sews off a very tiny patch of stomach at the end of the esophagus, so you can only eat a very small amount of food. The pouch is about the size of your thumb. Then, they cut the lower intestine and sew it onto the stomach pouch so that most of the food you eat does not go through the entire bowel and therefore less calories, fat , nutrients etc. get absorbed into the body.

It is major surgery and it will change your eating habits for life. You can no longer eat large portions. You can't eat high fat or high sugar foods because they will make you nauseas and cause you to vomit. You will have to take vitamins and supplimets such as iron and calcium for the rest of your life because you will not be able to eat enough food to sustain the neccessary amounts of these. Your bowels no longer function normally either and esting the wrong foods will cause major gastric upset and diarreah.

It is only for severly obese people. You have to go through physical and psychological evaluations to qualify for the procedure.

It is a very dangerous surgical procedure only done on very morbidly obese people. The stomach is actually sectioned off to make it smaller, so that the person cannot consume as much food as before. A strict doctor supervised diet and exercise regime follow for months after surgery.

Because it is so dangerous, only really obese people are candidates for this surgery.
