Multiple sclerosis is disqualifying for retention {AR 40-501, Chapter 3, para. 3-30(e)}. Therefore, you must be separated. You will appear before a medical board. If you have less than three years of service, the presumption is that your condition existed prior to entry and should have disqualfied you in the first place. If you have three years or more of service, the medical board report will be sent on to the Physical Evaluation Board of your particular service for a recommendation of a disability rating. Should that board award you a disability rating of 30% or more, you will be transferred to the Disability Retired List and will undergo a physical every four years to see if there is any improvement in your condition. While on the Disability Retired List you will enjoy all of the pay and benefits accorded those who were retired from the service without disability.

I'm not quite sure how the army does it but I know if you were in the air force you would go through a medical evaluation board. Your doctor will have to submit a narrative summary concerning your condition. Depending on how long you have been in the military and how bad your condition is, they can return you to duty, medically retire you, or discharge you (again it depends on how long you've been in). Someone from the Medical Evaluation Boards office will probably be contacting you in a few weeks to discuss the process. I have a friend who has MS and was diagnosed years ago. She went through the whole medical board process and they placed her on a Code-C where she could not deploy or PCS oversees. Her condition got worse this year and she had to go through another medical board. She has now medically retired. You should talk with your provider about it or talk with someone in the Patient Administration office.

Depends on how long you have been in. If you have been in less than 8 1/2 years you will probably be discharged. If more than 8 1/2 years any condition you develop that amounts to over 30% should require you to be retired.
