I believe they are trained to be more arrogant and self-righteous. That is what makes them want to fight for their reputation. The army i believe fights more for their buddies and themselves... lives in general. Both sides fight for the freedom of innocent American lives, but do the personalities differ because of the training in basic training?

To be a Marine, you have to want to be a Marine no matter what job you get during training. So I would have to agree with you that the Marines are more arrogant than the Army. It is not a bad thing I would have to say. Marines have a rich past to uphold. Not saying that the other branches do not, but it seems like to me from Marines I talk to at times have the for sure attitude.

If anyone tries to down play the Army, remember who trains the Marines on all Special Operations Training (the Army does).

The Marines aren't arrogant, they just have more of a reason to be prideful. They have better training and are taught from the beginning that they have a reputation to uphold. They are the best of the best. The Marines are the few and the proud...not by the ton and the sloppy....Don't get me wrong...all branches work just as hard to defend this country...but the marines are the first to arrive and the last to leave. They are given more responsibility from what I am told. And Daniel ("Army Strong")...as far as I am concerned they train "WITH" the army...not FOR the Amy....if that were the case I'm sure we'd have a bunch of Jessica Lynch's running around the Marine Corps. The Marines and the Army work together in some cases...they are basically attached to each other over there. That's why they train "together". And so the Marines get used to the fact that they have to look after all of your army buddies. :) My husband just got back from training with his unit in an Army base....so I'd know. I'm surprised you don't.

Interesting question! I look forward to reading more responses!

Having never served in either the Army, Navy or Marine Corps, I have no ax to grind. I am also a student of military history and have been privileged to know many from both the Marines and the Army. That said, here is the reality TODAY. The Marines are highly trained for combat. However much of their support comes from the Navy - the Army must provide its' own support. It's not practical to train everyone in the Army to the same level as the Marines. Additionally, the Army includes many more Guard and Reserve units than the Marines. These are there to provide a much larger force in the event of a protracted, large scale war. So, the real question is this: Are the regular Army Combat Units trained to the same level as the Marines? From those who I have talked to, after the required "kidding" is taken care of, it is apparent that the current level of training in combat units is about equal. Marines are tasked with the special role of "amphibious landings" but it has been over 60 years since the Marines conducted an opposed landing "over the beach". In reality, the two roles are much the same. In terms of capability, the average Marine is no more or less highly trained than a member to the 101st Air Mobile Division. Army infantry training is just as hard and long as Marine basic. There is also a huge amount of cooperation and "cross pollination" between the Army and the Marines. Elements of US Army Ranger training have been directly incorporated into Marine training. More and more the line between Marine roles and Army roles is being blurred. Most of the time they are doing the exact same missions. Other times units are composed of both Army and Marine personnel - such as teams consisting of an Army Special Forces "A Team" and a US Marine platoon. It would not be at all unusual for US Air Force controllers to be assigned to such a group - and of course the US Navy Supplies the Marines with medics, or more properly "Medical Corpsman". Additionally, there is the US Special Operations Command - made up of about 60,000 personnel from the Marines, Navy, Army and Air Force. Effectively, this is very much another branch of our military. So, the bottom line is that we are move closer to where other nations - including Israel and Canada - are: A unified military - in which being a Marine would be your specialty, rather than your branch. Ironically, the best argument for this is the Marine Corps itself. They have proved that a single branch including both sea, land and air forces works very well. It would work just as well if we applied the same principle to the whole military.

I spent four years active duty in the Marines and 13 months in Vietnam as a radio operator. I have always been proud of being a Marine but never really talked much about Vietnam. Marine boot camp was 12 weeks and then 4 weeks of advanced infantry training before you even had a MOS (job assignment). No other service gave that kind of intense basic training to each and ever recruit on how to kill, survive, and use weapons. You then went onto specialized training for what ever your MOS was. You don’t become arrogant as a Marine because you know you have been trained well and can usually outperform the other services. In a conflict like Vietnam we were able to hit the ground running were as the Army had to learn. After a period of time if you survived regardless of what branch of service you were in you knew what to do.
The Marine Corps is a smaller close knit service and that saying of once a Marine always a Marine is cherished by most Marines. So I don’t think it’s arrogance I think it's more of a pride of knowing you belong to one of the best fighting forces with a deep long history.

The attitude is different because the Marine Corps is much smaller than an Army. There is a lot of Marine Corps History taught in boot camp. Every Marine understands what is expected of him. It is not correct to say a Marine does not fight for his buddies lives. The Marines have a reputation of not leaving another Marine behind, even if they are dead. The basic training is dramatically different, which may account for some of the attitude. Every Marine knows he completed boot camp, which is not like any other service's training. I never thought I was arrogant and I did not see that in other Marines.

Marines are trained as soldiers first... The Army boys aren't.
The Marine Corps is essentially an EXTREMELY large S.F branch... therefore, they tend to hold that reputation...
The Marines are the tip of the spear, and the Army is usually the occupying force...
Each Branch of the military (yes - including the coast guard and chair force) serves an important purpose...

Above all though - ANY individual who chooses to serve in the Armed Forces has my respect - I don't care if you're washing dishes 200 miles off the coast of Venezuela - you're serving your country...

You don't have to support the war - but support the troops - from all branches... they keep America free.

Arrogant.....not for the most part. A E3 in the Army's Infantry and a E3 in the Marines Infantry act pretty much the same. The only exceptions I have ran in to were the Marines fresh out of boot camp. The senior Marines and others with some years under their belts are confident in their abilities. This may come off as being cocky to some people. When it comes down to it, all the branches fight for the same goals and reasons. Our paths and actions along the way may be different but we end up in the same place at the end.

My husband is in the Army and my brother is a Marine. I would have to say my brother is the more arrogant of the two. Even though my husband ranks higher and has a better MOS my brother thinks he is god's gift to humanity. All the marines I know are that way. I think you are right they are trained to be. They are all great guys don't get me wrong. From personal observations the Marines drill it in to your brain that the marines come first no matter what and the Army does the same but not as aggressively (I had a colonel tell me the new army believes in family first)

ARROGANT? Never! Its hard to be HUMBLE when you are the BEST! Every recruit in boot learns that every Marine before him or her carried The Corps to where it is today, and that it is up to them to carry it into the future HONORABLY! In the 232 years of service to this GREAT NATION, The Marine Flag has NEVER been dropped on a battlefield. The main mission of the Marines is simple: KILL!! And we are damn good at it! Marines know that if they go to war they are coming home. We have a Brotherhood that is forged and cannot be bent or broken. The other services are jealous of our ESPRITE de CORPS and often wonder what they can do to conjure up some for themselves.
ARROGENCE? I think not
GOD, COUNTRY, CORPS?
YOU BETCHA !!!

We are very arrogant, and yes we are trained that way for the same reason you stated above. However when we fight it is as a team. We will fight hard and vicious and fast, but we will NEVER NEVER leave a fellow Marine behind. I and many other will die trying to recover a wounded or dead Marine. We pride ourselves on the fact we never leave a man behind alive or dead.
