i have been to 4 doctors, and 1 sports therapist, over the past 6 years, trying to find relief for what i think is severe shin splints. In addition i have asked my track and field coach (when i was on the team) and a college basketball coach, and my football coach how to get rid or at least help the pain in my legs. Whenever i run, sometimes walk, or even use my legs at all, i get insane shooting pains, extreme soreness, and movement imparing pains all over my calves. These have been getting worse little by little over at least 6 years, and im only 14 years old and im worried for how my condition might be in the future, especially because i am active in highschool football, and love it. is there any suggestions for what i should do to help make the pain go away? besides pain killers seeing how i take 6 IBprofen a day and the pain is barely weakened. i also ice, stretch, excersize, and i have custom orthotics that are supposed to be helping me. please please try to help me. thanks

it's unfortunate that the doctors cannot find a solution for you.

Instead of using ice try the following: Take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts. Soak for 30 minutes. The Epsom salts will help eliminate the lactic acid that forms on the muscles from over exertion.

Massage an analgesic cream into the sore muscles.

Dehydration can cause severe pain in the muscles. I recommend you drink purified water mixed with Mineral Water 50/50. This will replace the minerals that are exiting your body continuously. You must drink beyond your thirst to get the benefits of hydration and the real key is the Mineral Water. The mineral water is going to replace what ever mineral is deficient in your body.

I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body. One tip for athletes: it is healthier to drink a sports drink or water than fruit juice, soda, coffee, or milk during competition or active training periods.

500mg of calcium and magnesium, taken twice daily, can help with diminishing the pain.

Advil liqui capsules work very quickly on pain. Take them four times daily. use these instead of the Ibuprofen, these work very fast.

Stop Shin Splints Forever?

i have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!
all my doctors[three] have told me i need to lay off sports, but even a six week break [i ended up tearing the ligament from my bone, and i sprained it from running on it funny while it was torn] the six weeks didnt help.

try filling dixie cups with water, and freezing them completely. then tear sections of the dixie cup off, so there is about half an inch of ice sticking out of the cup, and massage your shins for about fifteen minutes with the ice. and do it twice a day.

also ask your trainer about cold whirlpools.

i hope this helps a little. it helped me tolerate pain a little more. but it wont make it go away.

if you're working on distance, try running on the grass, because when youre running on a hard surface it will pound your legs even more.

a break from sports might help you, but. i wouldnt take a break myself, so i wont push it on you.
