A DAC is simply a digital to analog converter. Also, there are ADCs, or analog to digital converters. They both require some ancillary circuits, and they convert from 1 bit to 16 bits, depending upon the system design requirements. Analog Devices Inc is a major manufacturer, as Newark is a sales outfit. Look up digital to analog converters on the net (overload!!!!). They are used in a lot of devices once you learn the part numbers. DVDs, Cd's, robotics, automation, communications, ad infinitum use them.
