Well, you can make yourself faint, and they do.

I've had many religious leaders "lay hands' on me, and never was I "slain in the spirit." I always thought it was an act or, as someone said, mind over matter. I am not a person who is easily led by suggestion or peer pressure. Not even a professional hypnotist had any luck in trying to hypnotize me.
However, I attended a healing service with the Rev. Shuman, who had come to a little church in our town. He had such a powerful healing touch, that I fell over before I knew what happened. I cannot put the experience into words for someone else, but it's not an experience to be taken lightly. You have been touched, and healed in body and in mind, and you feel renewed and rejuvenated. It's like, well, being born again, only you are still in the same body you had before.

I think other folks here have given some good views. Being expected to respond in a certain way will lead a lot of people to "perform" correctly for the situation.
Some people are more suggestible to hypnosis than others. Combine an inclination to hypnotic suggestion with a very powerful and charismatic preacher personality, and you have set up excellent conditions for fainting, talking in tongues, and spontaneous healing events.

I have never seen 1 person faint in church. I once was touched by a Pastor with regards to my stopping smoking. He annoited my forehead and layed his hands on my head. I did feel a strange electrical type sensation that travelled down my spine and burst in my tailbone lower back area. I still smoked because I was weak. It was bizarre.

It is called being slain in the spirit and it is not fainting. It is basically being overcome by God's power and presence. While some people say that it is fake I have experienced it and know it is real. I have also never seen anyone hurt when this occurs whether they are caught on the way down or just fall and hit the floor. In fact in one case a woman in our church was slain and hit her head into the brick wall on the way down. She was not hurt at all. She did not have a bump on her head or a headache or anything.

Okay!!
This is a very good
question!! I go to a church
like that, and I'm going to
be honest with you! I've
had the preacher lay hands
on me before and I fall out!
I can promise you, it is the
most AMAZING feeling
ever!! The reason people
fall out is because the tap
into the kingdom of
Heaven. When people
fall out, they seek God
in a diffrent way!! It is a
very amazing feeling
that I would NEVER
take back, because
through that moment
I got closer to The
Lord, God!!

The spirit of our living God which is Jesus Christ touches them. People dont need to be in a big church to be able to recieve God's spirit. People just need to believw in God. I also believe that what matters alot is the peoples faith and hunger for God. If you have no hunger for God you are not interested, if you lack faith in Jesus Christ than how will you be able to believe in God for Jesus Christ is the only path to God.

The reason for this is that some people have such a powerful emotional reaction in their zeal that they pass out and has nothing to do with being' touched by God'.

When ever I see that type of thing I think its a fraud. I love the Lord and anything is possible through Him. But i don't trust that stuff too much.
