I am going to be getting a Pit Bull puppy in a couple of weeks and I want to cut his tail. Is their any way that it can be done? I was told that if you wrap a rubber band that the tail can fall off like that is that true? I want to get if removed because a Pit Bull looks more like a Pit Bull with it's tail removed. I am not a dog hater I love dogs please don't critizise me. GOD BLESS

If you are getting a "Pit Bull" I am guessing you mean American Pit Bull Terrier. It is not the norm to dock their tail! It will look odd if you do that. Also, whoever told you about the rubber band is REAL WRONG! Puppies that do get tails docked, traditionally, like Dobermans and Rottweilers, have them docked when they are only a few days old. Your dog has a lot of bones in the tail not to mention nerves and such that are well developed by the time you will be getting it. A rubber band on the tail would be dangerous to the dogs health and you could lose a lot more than the tail! You could lose the DOG. Also your freedom for a bit.
ASPCA would actually charge you with cruelty and arrest you for using a rubber band and attempting to dock your dogs tail. PLEASE read up on the breed because the docked tails are NOT NORMAL for the breed!

Pit bulls look more like pit bulls WITH tails. No tail is a symbol for a fighting dog - as is cropped ears.
The AKC does not recognize AmStaffs or Staffies with docked tails. And neither the UKC or any other registry I could find would recognize an APBT with a docked tail.

There are numerous "home tail docking" procedures, but I would stay FAR away from all of them! You can cause way more harm than good if you try to do this yourself. If you insist on the horrific procedure, take him to a vet! It is also illegal to dock a dog's tail at home in most places. If you can't afford the vet to dock the tail, then don't get the dog - tail docking is cheap compared to many of the other required vet visits you may have.

The younger the puppy is when its tail is docked, the better. You should never try to do this type of surgery yourself.

The tail is not remove-able with rubber rings like they used to castrate bulls with.

Most vets wont do this for you after 4 weeks unless the tail has been severely injured. We had 3-year old terrier get run over by a car and had to have her tail removed and it took the poor girl 6-12 months for the stubby to heal.

Doing this to a puppy after a certain age will be cruel and could end up making the poor dog mean.

Nope, somebody gave you some wrong information. A rubber band around a dog's tail will only cause the dog a lot of pain. If you want to have the dog "look right" and cut it's tail then you MUST take the dog to a vet and have the vet do it. Any other way would be mean and hurt the dog.

All the pit bull owners I know do not doc the tails of the dog why because you are not suppose to, if you really want to doc the tail then just go to a vet because do it yourself procedure is not humane so please go to vet and remember a pit bull looks more like a pit bull with a tail.

Aah,...I'm sorry but you were given the wrong information about what the Pit Bull should look like. You really should do a little research before getting your puppy. But, If having the tail docked is what YOU want, check with your local vet.

why would you do that I know you said not to critize but they need their tails they arent bull dogs-- Cutting the tail wont make it look more like a pit-- I own 2 pits 7 years old and 8 months old-- I have friends with pits as well and have seen Pit farms I have never seen one with out a tail-- Dont do its stupid-- If for some reason you do decide to do it take the dog to a professional talk to a local vet dont take the dog to a chop shop or some dummy who will do it in there basement-- and most def dont try and do it yourself-- Also dont fight your dog-- I love pits and they are awesome dogs and very loyal to their owners-- be a good owner of a pit they have a really bad rep- dont be suprised if when your walking your dog people look at you like your walking a lion- I get it all the time my oldest is 80lbs and at 7 months had a 22 inch head-- oh yeah the head and face is how they look like pits nothing to do with their tails-- Read about Pits too

u cant just rub a rubber band around the tail and wait for it to die and fall off. this is cruel and inhumane. people could call the cops on u and they would take ur dog away. and a pit bull doesnt have a docked tail. the breed standard calls for the whole tail. there r very few dogs that really need to have their tails docked. it is very painful for the dog and if u truly loved ur dog u wouldnt do it.

Doing it that way would be torture for the dog and would likely get infected really badly.

Veterinarians dock dog's tails, usually the same time they remove the dew claw on the legs. PLEASE let a professional do it or you're likely to loose your puppy to infection.

If you don't think it would hurt, try wrapping that rubber band around your little finger really tight and see how it feels after just a little while. Then try to imagine how it would feel if you left it on till the finger 'fell off', which it won't, it'd just die and loose the blood supply but still be there.

Wrapping a rubber band around the tail will get you NOTHING except an infected tail, and a few years in prison for animal cruelty!

Tail docking needs to be done by a licensed veterinarian within a few days after birth. If the breeder did not already have it done by his/her vet, it's not possible for you to have it done now...
