I once had a beagle for 3 days... and it ran away. It was probably the worst 3 days of my life. NO sleep because the dumb dog cried all night. Ate everything. Chewed everything. Then he ran away.

Now I don't know much about dogs, but it could be that beagles are the worst. Oh well. However, I don't recommend locking her up like that. The barking and crying will drive you MAD! :P

Although I would never agree with your form of training, I can fully understand your frustration. I have a 10 month old beagle mix. I have run large adoption shelters, I have been a vet technician and a huge supporter of animal adoption. I have 2 other dogs and 3 cats, all well behaved except this monster. I have tried ever form of training with only limited success. I am a strong pack leader and every animal in my life has been great. I even successfully trained a schipperke, everyone who met her was amazed at what a great dog she was since ships are very difficult and nippy. This beagle thing............sometimes I think he is the dumbest dog alive and then sometimes the most brilliant. He behaves well but only if I am on him like a hawk all the time. I turn my back for a second and he's dug a hole, shredded a toy, eaten something foreign or started a tussle with another dog. If I scold him or push him away, he will find just a second to force out a poop somewhere when I go to the bathroom or something. I suspect this breed is a lot like the schipperke, it's the roll of the dice on how bad one might be. I believe you adopt a dog and it's a lifetime commitment but boy is it a struggle, he senses my dislike for him and he just gets worse. Can't help not liking him though, I think it his total lack of respect for me or any of our large pack. Best of luck, probably best to find the dog a new home, many times a single older owner may do best with an insecure dog.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aUP5m

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

First of all, locking any dog in a closet is just wrong, and certainly will not do anything to help correct the behavioral problems! She has already been abused in her first home, and now she is being abused in her current home, from what you write. Her obsession with food very possibly stems from previous abuse also.
Spanking the dog for chewing things that you don't want her to chew is also not helpful. Instead, take away the object she is chewing and give her something she can chew on, like a toy, chew bone, etc. Re-direct her attention to demonstrate the behavior that you do want will go much farther.
Some basic obedience classes would also be a good idea, doing obedience work with your dog helps to form a bond between you, and lets the dog know what you expect of her in a positive way.
If nothing else, try spending some time playing with the dog, getting her some exercise. A tired dog is a good dog! If she's tuckered out, she's less likely to get into trouble.

Okay dude, you need to chill. I have had a beagle puppy for only 5 months, and he rarely barks and never chews things. If he chews, he stops with just a stern no. And I may know nothing about you, but I know that hitting your dog and locking her in a closet for 2 HOURS is animal abuse. Also, I know for a FACT that most people who abuse animals go on to abuse their children. 85% of women and 65% of children who are seeking shelter from domestic violence also report animal abuse. So next time you try to LOCK HER IN A CLOSET for a few hours, think of what you're actually doing. The poor dog has been abused enough, and she just wants some love.

Beagles are a great family dog! I had a beagle as my first dog but about three years ago she ran off our porch and got hit by a car. Anywho. You said the dog was abused..That's probally a reason that it acts this way. My dog was an angel (and she LOVED food to) I think any dog does. We would open our food closet thingy and she would come RUNNING into the room. (thats were we kept her treats) Beagles are not such a hassle it's just training. My beagle was GREAT. And don't wish it to run away. Cause I wish mine was back ya know. .. You never know how much you'll miss something until there gone :

I can so relate. I have a beagle named Rhonda and let me tell you, she's the dumbest animal you'll ever meet. She's 10 years old yet she still pees and poops in the house. And what does the rest of the family do? THEY FRICKIN PRAISE HER. I hate her I want her dead I am so close to stabbing her and bashing her ugly face into the floor she should have been left at the pets mart who knew they could keep such an ugly animal.

We have a Beagle and yes they are like that!
They will eat and chew on almost everything, and they are very stubborn too. You need to realize that they are very easily distracted. (they are a hunting breed) Also as you probably know, they are very hyper and need a yard and supervision since they are escape artists.
We have had ours for 1 1/2 years and it has been an experience!
It took me about a year to fall in love with her, I kept trying to compare her to my our 2 dogs and not understanding the breed. She it a very loving dog and now wouldn't hesitate getting another Beagle. If you own or consider getting a Beagle please read up and understand what you are getting into, you will need alot of patience with this breed. Punishing the dog will only create more problems, especially since she has be abused and will relate your punishment to abuse.

Actually what it sound like is that you are the worst human in the world. You did everything wrong in handling your dog and then blame the dog for your incredible stupidity. You call the dog stupid for reacting to your abuse. We can all only hope that you are locked in a closet someday, and left to starve. That is better than you deserve but maybe it would help your tiny mind to understand what an absolute monster you are.

I think you and your family need to have a serious talk. The dog is behaving badly because she is not getting the proper attention and guidance. Do you take the dog for walks, do you play, do you have a set routine with the dog? All of these are very important to a dog's well being. You need to be consistent with rules in your house for the dog. It sounds like your family got the dog before considering the responsibility that comes with it. dogs usually misbehave when they are bored and yes beagles are a tough breed, but it's what you do that counts take a training class with her, educate yourself about the breed she may just turn out to be your best friend.
