Professionally prerecorded DVDs use the container format "Version Object Based" (vob).

All DVD players play vob files. Some can use other container formats, but they all, by design, read vob.

A DVD player has to only play VOB files.

However, most players will play MPEG1 (VCD), MPEG2, JPEG, MP3s, and Divx (MPEG-4, part 2), but there is no such a requirement. There are now a few players that can play wmv files as well.

For the most part, MPEG and JPEG files. Just read the

specs of the specific DVD player that you're considering

(or already have) and see what files it will play.
