I applied at a few stores using their online application but I'm not really sure if they were hiring, can I still call and ask about the status of my application?

I rarely got a call back doing online applications. I'm sure those companies get loads of resumes that way and they end up in a huge database. You have to show your positive attributes by dropping by the desired stores and asking employees about how to get a job there. Be very friendly and positive and they will remember you as a smiling face. If you can speak with the manager or hiring person, you've struck gold!

Calling will actually give you an edge over the other applicants who have also applied. Even if they are not hiring your calling will show that you are ambitious and outgoing. They may not hire you right now but when a position comes open they will remember your ambition. Call at least once per week to check the status on your application. If this is somewhere you really want to work, you may have to take a part time job with another company until the place you want to work starts hiring again.

Absolutely! You can always call, and if you actually show interest in the job, other than just filling out an app, you're more likely to get the job than others who DON'T follow up on the app.

You can call and ask. Tell them that you applied online, and asking if they have any current openings or expect any soon.

Good luck.
