I just got a 1996 Volkswagen Jetter 5 speed manual, black, moonroof, CD player for $1500!!!!!! With all the taxes, it was around $1900. I am so excited! Is this a reliable car? Has anyone had problems?

You have a good car; those built from 1994 till 1998, were of a generation that was designed to be transport, not a mini luxury vehicle. The big issue is making sure that the timing belt and tensioner are in good shape. Normally, they would have been replaced by now, but, it being a used car and all, you have no way to confirm this.

Have the timing belt inspected; they may not be able to tell you that its new, but they sure can tell you if its worn and due for replacement. Timing belt failures are expensive; if it requires replacement, also replace the frnt engine seals and the water pump, as these add very little cost to the timing belt/tensioner replacement, but can save lots of money later when they fail (trust me, if you don't replace them, they'll fail before the timing belt does).

If you didn't do so yet, have the vehicle inspected by an independent party to insure its safe and recommend whatever needed repairs might be needed. If you purchased the base 4 cylinder, non turbo motor, then it should last you a while. In my experience with them in the dealership, you should get well over 200,000 miles with it, provided its in good shape and you follow the recommendations from the factory regarding service.

Have it serviced by someone who understands VW; it does not have to be the dealer, but someone who works on VW or Audi's every day. This will insure that you have issues with the car dealt with in a manner that is benefical to you.

Congratulations on your purchase, its a great road car. I wish you nothing but trouble free driving ahead. A car nut.

Jetta's look effective, and are great little automobiles while they artwork, yet be confident you get the automobile appeared at by using a mechanic formerly you purchase one. i offered a clean 2001 vr6 decrease back in 2000, and that i've got had many mechanical problems and somewhat have 50,000 miles on the automobile (new transmission, 2 new coil packs, serpentine belt, fan belt/pulley, etc.) Plus the 'verify engine' mild is on constantly. My suggestion is to ward off the 2001 fashions, as each little thing i've got examine is they're no longer something yet hassle (and as an proprietor of one, I agree!). verify shopper comments for the three hundred and sixty 5 days which you're questioning of procuring for, to double verify any ability subject concerns. For the main area, although, Jettas are the two a great automobile or a ton of hassle... there is not any longer a great number of a midsection floor. stable success!

I've got friends with Jetta's and they've not had any problems. Did you run the serial numbers through to make sure the car had not been involved in any accidents? Also, did you have a mechanic look at it first. Any used car can be a lemon. You just have to check it out first.
