Kind of a grey area here where touching another persons property may be the correct response...or is it?

If it is at a store, tell someone in the store to announce it over the intercom. If it is at a house, if you feel brave enough walk up to the door and tell them.

The moment you walk up and close it by yourself, you are messing with private property. And you may be automatically responsible for what may have been in that trunk before that is now missing. Some people take offense. Its sad but true. Everything has its proper channels. Don't forget to take your safety and innocents into consideration.

Anytime I see a situation where someone or something is left vulnerable, I tend to just sort of stick around to make sure things end up okay. In this case, I'd probably close the trunk most of the way, not latch it, and wait for the owner to show up. I'm with you, though, touching other people's stuff can sometimes end up badly, so I'm a little cautious about it.

Heck no! They may be coming with something very large and heavy and they will have to set the load down in order to open that silly trunk again!

Yeah they might have it open for a reason, but if you know the owner you should tell them. I had my trunk open at the house, My daughter was playing with my keys, and it was about to rain and my neighbor came and told me it was open.

No, they may have left it open on purpose. You could try to alert the person that the trunk is open.

Nah! They probably left it open cuz they had stuff to put in it and didn't want to take time to put their stuff down, open the trunk, pick up the stuff again and put it in the trunk. I've done that before.

Maybe they're coming right back and left it open on purpose, so could you shut it without latching it? Also make sure there's no groceries inside.

I probably wouldn't. Just because of the fact that I don't know them, or something may be wrong.
