very often you can slide your hand inside the gill covers when you pick them up if it is a large fish the mouth usually opens then but be care-full some fish like pike have teeth lower down the throat and you can catch your fingers on them john Wilson (English)uses a lite chain mail glove for this type of fish artery forceps are also good for taking hooks out of a fishes mouth you can pry the mouth open with them and take out hooks from deep hooked fish hope this helps

If it's a toothy bluefish, hold it with one hand under the gill. Make sure your fingers are on both sides of the gill plate. This usually will open the mouth. If not lean the fish forward or backwards.

Thumb in mouth and index finger bent under lower lip and lift. Called "Lip Landing", (not for all fish, commonly used method for bass) scroll down page of site and it'll be described a LOT better than I have ;)...

Usually by the time I wrench the hook out of it's mouth, it's jaw is all loosened up and I can just slip a thumb in.
