my older sister and her boyfriend of about 4 years are going to have a "break". Theyve been together since their sophomore year and both have currently finished their first year of college. They say its temporary. The reason? "To explore the world on their own and meet new people." If you really love someone, do you realllly need to meet "new" people? Im just curious.

They have been together since they were SO young! Of course they're curious about other people, dating and sex. They may love eachother, but love isn't always enough for some people to be happy.

It's been my experience that breaks don't work. Once there is a break, a break up is sure to follow. People can take a break and then get back together.. but then it rarely works the 2nd time around.

If you really love someone then no, you don't need to meet new people..,. at least not new ones you go on dates with.

My boyfriend and I (well, mostly I did) decided to go on a break because I needed "time to think about where this relationship was going". Turns out we couldn't live without each other for even a day haha. On the other hand, my friend and her boyfriend took a break, he hooked up with some hoochie and their relationship went kaput.

So the best answer I can give you is that "breaks" may or may not be necessary. They are good in the sense that they tell you where your relationship is going, and bad because they can cause you suffering.

(Personally, I learned my lesson, the seperation was too great for us. =] )

At that young of an age - it may not be a bad thing. If you are asking for the break - then you obviously want to see other people. Normally - I would say that was wrong - but at that young of an age - that is normal.

No, they're not. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, sounds like a nice way of saying "we're breaking up and we may or may not get back together, but we'll remain on amicable terms."

breaks are basically just a way for one person or the other (or both) to go out and hook up with other people. if one person is unhappy in a relationship, they'll say "i want to take a break" and if the other agrees, then they're automatically going to assume its alright to hook up with someone else.

breaks are never good and are just asking for trouble...

Taking a break is usually a nicer way of asking to break up.

sometimes ppl have doubts about thier relationships and want to make sure that they want to spend the rest of thier lives with that person. I think its un neccesary and they will probably find someone new, but thats the chance they are taking/.
