I just bought a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire from a local buy here pay here dealership and for some reason I'm kinda thinkin' I got ripped off. I put $900.00 down payment and I still owe $1005.00. He told me when I bought it that it had 108,000 miles on it and now that I got it I see that it has 768,000 miles on it. He just kinda seems like a lowlife dealer but I'm not sure what he's like because I don't know anyone who's ever bought from him before so I can't ask for advice. It has brand new brake pads, struts in the back, new tires, new lug nuts and hub caps, and it has really nice interior. Overall it seemed like a really nice car but now that I drive it I'm noticing that the mirror on the passenger side is broken so it won't pass inspection, I'm thinkin' it needs new front struts as well because it clunks and clicks every time I hit the slightest bump. I also noticed that when I start it the engine rocks back and forth like you wouldn't believe. Send me your opinions please?!....HELP

You paid under $2000 for the car. I tend to think that you are looking at something wrong if you think the car has 768,000 miles on it. If that is the real mileage, call Pontiac! They would love to feature that car in an advertising program!!

The price does not sound bad at all! It is well within the retail value, allowing for the fact that you are going to have to have some minor repairs done!

$2000 does not buy much these days when you are talking about a car! I think you got a pretty good deal!

768,000 ?? Are you sure ?? Goto www.kbb.com and you should be able to value your car. You will get three values
1) Retail value - What to expect to pay if you bought the car from a dealer
2) Trade in value - what a dealer would give you if you traded one in
3) Private party value - What someone would sell the car for

Add all three up and devide by three to get an average. This would be a real world idea of what your car would be worth.

Either way, I personally think you should take it back. If he told you it had 108,000 and now it had 600,000 more, that alone should be grounds for false advertising...

Sounds like you need new motor mounts. That can be expensive. The KBB value on that car is $2,700. It's hard to say you got ripped because used cars are never perfect and always need work. However, with $900 down, you definitely could have gotten a newer car. I only had to put down $500 on my 2002 Camry. If you bought it from a dealer, they should have given you a warranty. If not, you just have to suck it up and take it to a mechanic. Also, check out your state's lemon laws to see what your options are. I don't know that you have many as long as it is running and you haven't had it looked at yet.

768000 miles is impossible
unless the previous owner drove 210 miles everyday for 10 years
