So yeah I want to start babysitting but I don't know anyone with kids young enough to be babysat really. I do know though that the peole across the road have a daughter who is about 1 and a bit. I wouldn't trust myself on my own with a child that small but I think the father works like away at the mines or something that takes him away for long periods of time. Should I offer to babysit while the mother is still home to give her a bit of a break? Then maybe once I get to know the baby I can start babysitting while she's out. Afterall my parents would be literally like 20 metres away. So since I don't know this family too well how do I approach them to ask? I would just really like to babysit as I love kids. By the way I am 14.

Thanks

You have a good idea! Talk to the mom - or if your mom knows her better - and offer yourself as a mother's helper. Even for just a couple of hours a day, so mom can do things without having to entertain the baby the whole time.

If you see her out, offer her a hand with something. Then casually mention to her that you're starting to look for work as a mother's helper, and see what she says. If she says it's a great idea, ask if she'd like to be your first client.

Good luck!!

A lot of the girls in my neighborhood started out as mother's helpers (what you are descibing). Then they move up to babysitting only when their parents (the babysitters parents) are home. If it is someone whose kids they have watched for a while, they will then go to babysitting when their parents might not be home.

Good luck

I guess if I knew you a little, and you approached me with that idea, I'd be more up for it if you offered to do it a couple of times at no charge (since I'd be home, and since I didn't come up with a need for a sitter myself). Maybe word it as you would like to help me out as well as build up some references. If you're new to sitting just ask if the Mom would like to have a little break, and in return she could be a reference if you need it. If you do a good job and she does need a sitter, she may be your first client.

i used to babysit when i was younger.. what i would do is go up to there door introduce yourself and tell them that you noticed that they have a daughter and see if they need a babysitter at all.. just offer your services of babysitting if they want to go out by themselves or to give mom a break.

I call that a "Mother's Helper". I think that would be a great idea. I wish you lived across the street from me.:) Next time you see the mom out, go over and offer your services.

Your idea sounds great.
Perhaps if you the the mom & daughter going for a walk or out in the park, you can approach them and offer your idea.
I would take you up on your offer if I was the mom!
