What are your opinions on Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and the way Islam treats women?

She is the Author of "Infidel". I think she is a brave and good woman. She is standing up for the rights of Islamic women who, I feel are often abused and treated very badly. I know not all of them are, but it does seem like Islam is not a very kind religion to women. I think it is a shame, how many of the men mistreat not only their wives, but their daughters and sisters. What is you opinion on her and the way Islam treats women? Why do you feel this way?

I guess I should have said Islamic men not Islam. Sorry about that. =)

And I know not all but it does seem to be a rather big problem in many Islamic nations.

I agree that she is very brave. I don't understand how any woman can worship a deity that actually says women are deficient. I don't understand how anyone can call Muhammad a godly man when he raped women and hit at least one of his wives. He's a Muslim's perfect example to follow? I also don't understand how a woman can share her husband. It seems that, according to islam, love and respect in marriage is not important. That's a horrible way to live your life IMO.

So brave and intelligent. Her books are great. The short film "Submission" was brutally honest, dramatic and a necessary wake up call to what Islam truly means and is about. It's horrible that those peaceful Muslims killed Theo Van Gogh and have threatened Ayaan Hirsi Ali's life over it. I guess those Muslims are threatened by the truth since they live a lie. At least she's not living a lie or being forced to marry any more.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is an extremely brave and strong woman. She is a true hero.

By the way, your question was phrased exactly right. The problem is not just with Islamic men, but with Islam itself. Let's take a look at what the Qur'an has to say about women:

"...And they (women) have rights similar to those (of men) over them in kindness, and men are a degree above them. Allah is Mighty, Wise. " 2:228

"...And call two witness from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not at hand, then a man and two women..." 2:282

"..Allah chargeth you concerning (the provision for) your children: to the male the equivalent of the portion of two females," 4:11

"And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess. " 4:24

"O Prophet! Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). " 33:59

"Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and BEAT them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them" 4:34

Here we go again. Someone makes an observation about the mistreatment of women living under Islam, something we all know about, and here comes the same old defensiveness - that's not Islam, that's just evil men who don't follow the koran, Islam respects women, I'm married to a muslim and he treats me like a queen, blah blah blah. So here's my question, our Muslim friends - why, if Islam is so pro-women, don't men in Muslim countries make laws enforcing this? If most Muslim men are so nice to their wives, why wouldn't they make laws requiring all men to be the same, if it's in their religion? Say what you want about Christianity, Jesus had a very radical view of women for that day. He ate with them, discussed with them, He even stopped to speak to an obvious harlot in the street! That's because he was God, not just a man of his "culture". That's why Muslim men act like that. Because Islam has not inspired them to change the society they live in, as Christianity has.

And if Muslim women have had all these rights for so long, why haven't Muslim men acknowledged those rights in law?

I don't know the author or her book, all I know is how I've been treated and how other Western women have been treated by Muslim men. I know what these men are taught and what these men teach their children, first hand.

Keep in mind, a hundred, or even fifty years ago, Western women didn't have much say about how they would be treated, so we need to give them a little slack. We were almost the same way.

I say almost, as I don't think it was common to threaten to kill or harm women should she be suspected. I had a conversation with a man who said he would stone his own Umwah (mother) to death, should she get caught with another man, (even if her husband had been dead for a long while.) I asked why, and he said, "If she got caught, she would deserve to die." (Even though He had confessed many times, his undying love for her. He can hardly say her name, it's so sacred to him.) This is the sentiment there, and everyone knows these things, There is very little crime in those places. (Except for the unchecked crimes against women.)

A very brave and intelligent woman who had to find security and freedom of speech in the USA, the "secular" netherlands being unable to protect this outstanding public personality from the islamic fundamentalists in its midst.

As an insider, having lived in the islamic culture, she knows what is the deleterious essence of fundamentalist islam, and why she is targetted - she was luckier than the film director Theo Van Gogh with whom she was doing a film critical of islam, who was assassinated by an islamist. "Infidel" is a must-read!

wow have you ever read anything about muslim women and their rights? i converted to islam, a former christian. my husband is muslim and i cannot be treated any more wonderful. see the problem is people look at the abusive muslim husbands and assume all are like this. but they do not look at all the abusive non muslim men and say wow christain men are abusers and the women are oppressed. they single out islam and pick pick pick. please read about the rights of muslim women,.we were given the right to own property,vote,choose our husbands and we were given so many rights that american women are just now able to get in the 20th century. islam treats women perfect. it is the men who do not follow islam that mistreat the women. a straight god fearing sunni muslim will never harm or mistreat his wife. but a lost sheep who doesnt pray or picks and chooses what part of the quran to follow will harm his wife. please research first dont simply listen to the media they dont know what they are talking about. so the women are mistreated just as much in christianity as they are in islam and buddism and jewish. because there are always men that feel they control everything and believe they can do these terrible things to women. so no a straight sunni muslim man will not harm or mistreat/ islam does not mistreat women please read the quran and you will see it yourself. go to www.islamway.com/sisters to read articles by muslim women and learn about the religion. dont assume. do you have any muslims friends? do you know any muslim women? how can you feel something if you are uneducated about it?

to be honest with you i never heard of this woman, but i can tell you that it is not Islam treating women that way, or Christianity is treating women that way, or Judaism either
its those men who don't respect they religion and what Allah said to us about how we must treat women either your mum or your wife or any women with respect and just .
and to let you know Islam religion gives the women her respect and dignity since the days of the prophet Peace and prayer on him and he never mistreated any women in his life and you can search about that in the history.
im not trying to make you think Islam gives respect and just to women and men and animals even plants i know for fact all that but if you want really to know read more about women right in Islam , and as you said in your question it is a shame on those men mistreat the women (so it is those men fault not the religions )
