What causes us to sneeze?

I was just wondering why we sneeze - is it an allergic reaction to something?

There are many causes for sneezing:
allergies (number one cause)
removal of irritants from nose (dust, smoke, etc)
respiratory infection (cold, flu, etc)
environment (rain, cold weather, etc)
ear infection
sinus infection
drug withdrawal
