My uncle is being ordained as a Catholic Bishop in September, and not having been raised Catholic myself, I have no idea what an appropriate gift is.

The best gift you can give a newly ordained bishop is an endowment fund in his name, proceeds going to either the Diocese itself or the seminary of the Diocese.

Where I live, our Diocese has endowments called "burses" (which is a Catholic term for a cardboard envelope used in Mass). They can be as little as $5. We have more than 250 of them, and there is one named after each of our Bishops, as well as many beloved priests, families, parishes, etc. So I would call the Diocese and ask if there is such an endowment program. Then either start the burse/endowment in your uncle's name or contribute to the one that exists.

This is a gift that will last FOREVER, because the principle is never spent; only the interest. It's a very nice thing to do that recognize your uncle's new role in his assigned Diocese.

(I do hope you'll go to the installation -- it's not every day that one gets to witness that!)

As a bishop, he probably already has all the religious articles he needs. So don't worry about that. Treat it like any other gift-giving occasion. Just add in a nice note that says you're pleased for him, etc. If my own aunts and uncles are anything to judge by, that'll be the part that's most important to him anyway.

If you don't know him that well and are still looking for suggestions, you might try a book or a movie (for either of these, you might try a religious-themed one. Two very excellent movies I've seen are The Mission (which is newer) and The Confession, (which is much older)). If he's into it, you could even give him a game - pictionary, dominos, trivial pursuit, etc. Bishops get to have fun too! If nothing else, you can always give him a gift certificate. I'd suggest staying away from straight cash, though, because that tends to lend the impression that you couldn't think of anything more personal to give. But whatever you give, don't forget to write that note! Something sincere and heartfelt is always the most welcome gift.

LOL, I hope you expected the weirdo answers. By Christian Catholic, do you mean like a Church independent from the Pope? I don't know if you are expected to give a present on such occassions. But if you really feel you must give a gift, I suggest you ask one of your priests or if you have a sort of parish office, the people working there can give suggestions.

A cheque is nice. A picture frame with a nice picture of his ordination if you get one. A pewter beer stein.
Gift cards A donation in his name to his favourite charity or to a charity somewhere in the region of his 'region" as bishop

Anything nice. Try a pen and pencil set, engraved with the date of his Ordination. You can even give him a check to get something he might need.

Cash, to buy whatever he needs, in a card.
