how long it takes to recover from a session of resistance training depends on the intensity that you use. using weights that are less than 60% of the 1 repetition maximum will not cause micro trauma to skeletal muscle or tax the central nervous system much. say a person could max 100 lbs on the squat. they could squat daily with load that were 60 lbs or less. when you exercise at a high level of intensity not only does the muscle have to recover but so does the CNS. muscle recover faster than does the CNS, so basically the stronger you get the longer the recovery period there will need to be between training days of that body part.
when you read about over-training this is from CNS burnout which then effects the ability for the muscles to function at optimal levels and strength declines as the end result.
so just because you no longer feel sore from a training session doesn't mean that you can hit that body part again. this is where time in the sport will teach you how long you need between sessions based on your training.
Lactic Acid has nothing to do with DOMS. DOMS is the end result of both microtrauma to skeletal muscle and a loss of calcium homeostasis in the muscle cell.
Edit:
it doesn't matter if you strength train or bodybuilder. a bodybuilder user progressive resistance to increase the strength but the diets that they follow cause maximum increases in muscle mass

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a normal phenomenon that occurs from lactic acid build up and also due to microtrauma that occurs when we exercise. Your DOMS should last no more part of the next day and should not significantly impair your day to day functioning at any time. If it lasts any longer than this, you are exercising at an intensity that may be harmful to your body.

From what i understand when you workout you have to weight a day. You do this because once you have worked out your muscles are all torn up. You have to weight to let them rebuild themselves. You can work out more than two days in a row but you muscles will probably be sore. You should weight longer till they are not sore to begin building muscles. Good Luck Lifting.

Some say anywhere as long as 72hrs. I normally would allow my muscles to rest as to how they feel...I got on a regimen where, for example, I will hit my chest and back on Mon, then wont touch it again til Thurs. It all depends on how hard you hit them when you workout. If you over train, you won't get ANY results and you can hurt yourself. Your muscles Have to heal themselves on those days of rest, so be careful. check out what I and others do http://bodyspace.bodybuilding.com/IDOIT4ME/
Feel free to ask any questions.

One day in between sessions is sufficient to remove the lactic acid build-up in yor muscles. Three to four workouts a week, with a days respite in between, will be entirely sufficient.
