Since you mentioned small, I'll just go with the bare essentials. This is assuming you want this to be most obviously a reading area. ^^
If not a bookshelf, find a small table. I don't know about you, but I like reading and just plopping my books down when I'm done at the nearest spot, or eating sliced fruit with my novel. If you like, you could put a pretty wicker basket nearby for some extra storage, as well.
A nice chair, of course. Go with a comfortable cushioned one if possible, or put a throw or something over a hard chair. Find a nice decorative pillow if you like so you can lean it on the chair and make it look prettier.
Lighting is vitally important. You can go with wall-lighting, a lamp on the table, a floor lamp, or an especially bright overall room light. However, it's best to have lighting specific to that area.
For extra decoration, put a tiny figurine on a table, the aforementioned decorative pillow, or pictures. Pictures can be hung on the wall or put in a nice little frame on your little table. And always keep a handful of bookmarks handy!
If you like tiny little details, perhaps a small rug in the area, or a few candles in a dish. A potted plant?

A nice spot light above your reading area so you can have the rest of the room dark. This will improve your concentration. A nice little coffee table near your reading area for a drink and/or snack

A nice comfy, sturdy chair. A good reading lamp with light that is pleasing to the eyes, a small table to keep your refreshment beverage on, a calming color on your walls, an ottoman to stretch your legs out on, and a small bookcase to keep your TOP 50 favorite books in. (Be sure to read 'Cruel Shoes' in your little reading spot. It is one of the funniest books ever written. Ridiculous, but funny.)

one chaise lounge with a funky side table and lamp... maybe you can make it private by hanging a curved or straight rod on ceiling to holda sheer or velvet antique curtain with tie back cords ( loosely tied)around the area to privatize the area
