It's obviously false, as it assumes the existence of a god.
Now, I do believe plenty of false things, and probably quite a few obviously false things. But this is one I've put considerable thought into, for obvious reasons, and I'm pretty certain that if there were any evidence for the existence of a god or of consciousness continuing after death, I'd know about it already (heck, the Christians here would be posting it everytime they come to R&S if there were any such evidence).
Now, I might believe it anyway despite the lack of evidence if I had enough emotional reason to do so, but I'm pretty honest that way - being right is very important to me, so it would take a LOT of emotional reward for me to ignore the lack of evidence.

Geez, were to begin.
1) The Gospels contradict each other, were written years after the alleged time the stories took place, and have had key words mistranslated over the years.
2) There is no evidence -- none -- for Jesus outside of these works and works directly copied from them. Trust me, I've heard all the counter-arguments (Josephus, Tacitus and the whole gang) and researched them all.
3) It's filled with archetypes I see in so many other mythologies that predate it (virgin births, resurrection, miracles, etc.), so I don't see why I shouldn't treat it as just another religion's mythology
4) Most importantly, I think the guidelines for morality it offers are ridiculous, let alone not inspirational. Yelling at fig trees? Cutting off hands and gouging out eyes for lust? Turning the other cheek when somebody's beating you? Trying to blindly apply "love" to every individual regardless of actions? It's probably the single most embarrassing and self-defeating philosophical work of humankind, and I find it repulsive that this Jesus character is held up as the protagonist when he represents some of the most pathetic traits of humans.
I understand WHY people cling to it. Either they were raised with the religion, go along with the accepted taboo that you can't say anything bad about Jesus, or they had some "born again" experience (where they transfered their feelings of guilt and reponsibility over to some external figure) and in this mental window of bliss, took to reading the Gospels to reinforce a particular idea of what they experienced. Regardless, I still reject it.

There are many, many books claiming to be holy in the world. The Christian bible is only one of them, and there is no better reason to believe those myths than any other.
We know that the Christian bible went through a substantial editing process, and that most of it was actually finalized well after the events it claims to describe happened. For that matter, the Christian bible discusses events that happened in Old Testament times, and gets many of the details wrong.
As a system of belief, or a philosophy of life, I find that the Christian bible doesn't stand up well against some other examples of world religions, such as the Theravada Buddhist scriptures, or the philosophical writings of Lao Tsu, the Gnostics, or even the Viking "Sayings from on High."

Just out of curiosity, why don't you believe in Santa Claus???? Could you give me a straightforward answer other than it's a bunch of B.S., or it's just a fairy tale or story or a cult or anything of the like?

Well, first of all, atheists do not believe in god(s)... so why would they believe in the 'son of god'? On that basis alone, your question goes far beyond 'silly'.
Second... the Old Testament is a collection of Hebrew mythology, pseudo-history, morality tales... with a teeny bit of actual history and place-names thrown in... not the stuff of 'belief'.
Third... 'salvation cults' were a dime-a-dozen in biblical times. The christ-cult was originally a midrashic up-dating of Judaism, attempting to incorporate 'modern' Hellenistic philosophical ideas. That describes the Christianity of Paul/Saul. Paul's early epistles give not even a HINT of the idea that his teachings had anything at all to do with a 'human' christ who had lived on earth in the recent past... his 'christ' operated strictly in 'heavenly' realms.
The idea for a 'human' christ did not arise until around 70AD... the Gospel of Mark. This is where the 'suffering-hero/king-god' archetype came into play... not the history of a man's life... just a series of vignettes in the archetype form, modified to incorporate reference to Hebrew scripture in order to create the illusions of prophecies fulfilled.
The Gospels of Matthew and Luke came much later... some scholars say after the beginning of the 2nd century. Both used Mark as a template, and fleshed it out with 'sayings' of Jesus, from a common source... the 'Q-document'... sayings which were Judaized versions of philosophical tidbits from the Greek 'cynic' and 'stoic' philosophies. This accounts for a lot of the discrepancies in the gospels... Matthew and Luke each invented scenes for Jesus to deliver these 'sayings'... but their scenes were different. Same sayings... different settings.
It is interesting to note that the total 'Jesus-time' accounted for in the bible ads up to no more than 3-weeks.
So... the Old Testament is mailny Bronze Age myth... and the only part of the New Testament are Paul's early epistles. The Gospels and the rest are fiction... and christianity... based on this fiction... is a total FRAUD... a 1,900 year-old criminal business conspiracy... and you are both a victim and an abettor. Victims that create other victims... what a sweet scam. The world's first, longest lasting and most successful MLM scheme... where the pay-plan doesn't kick in until after you're dead... and their is nobody to hear your complaint about having been scammed... although that really doesn't matter much, because you won't be able to complain anyway... because you'll be dead.
"There is not a single contemporary historical mention of Jesus, not by Romans or by Jews, not by believers or by unbelievers, not during his entire lifetime. This does not disprove his existence, but it certainly casts great doubt on the historicity of a man who was supposedly widely known to have made a great impact on the world. Someone should have noticed." ~ Dan Barker
"The Gospel story, with its figure of Jesus of Nazareth, cannot be found before the Gospels. In Christian writings earlier than Mark, including almost all of the New Testament epistles, as well as in many writings from the second century, the object of Christian faith is never spoken of as a human man who had recently lived, taught, performed miracles, suffered and died at the hands of human authorities, or rose from a tomb outside Jerusalem. There is no sign in the epistles of Mary or Joseph, Judas or John the Baptist, no birth story, teaching or appointment of apostles by Jesus, no mention of holy places or sites of Jesus’ career, not even the hill of Calvary or the empty tomb. This silence is so pervasive and so perplexing that attempted explanations for it have proven inadequate." ~ Earl Doherty, The Jesus Puzzle

Because they were written 200 years after Jesus died, hardly a first hand witness...
They were also modified by the First Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. to fit the Roman Bishops' philosophy, and the original written texts destroyed to preserve the new orientations ofthe Church.

I'm agnostic but I'll still answer. The bible was written by men. I don't believe any living man knows any more than any other man about what happens to us after we die. I choose to just sit back and wait instead of taking the advice of others.
