A Siberian Husky mix found her way into my yard about 3 weeks ago. Im not sure what the other beed is, but I can tell she is part husky. She had knots in her fur, plaque buildup on her teeth. She also had ear mites and worms. I took her to the vet and got her treated. Thank god she came back heartwarm negative. I posted found posters all over town and no one came to clame her. Should I take the posters down and clame her as my pet, or should I keep the posters up a little longer? I already contacted the animal shelter to let them know she is at my house. They also know what condishion she was in when I found her.

I know the shelter holds a stray for 7 days. If the owner dosent come for the dog, the shelter has the right to put the dog or cat up for adoption.

You have done everything right! Besides the shelter, contact petfinder.com and it can't hurt to place an ad in the paper. From the condition she was in, she was either on the street for a LONG time, or ignored where she was living. But I hope you keep her- sounds like she picked the right yard to wander into.

Depending on what city you live in ~ alot of cities have ordinance on claiming unwanted animals. Contact your local shelter/humane society and inquire on the time frame. I know if the humane society picks up a stray ~ they keep them for so long before they are available for adoption if gone unclaimed ~ once the animal is adopted, the animal is yours to keep by most adoption regulations set forth. If she is claimed by the owner, be sure to request pay back for all vet bills incurred and at least let them know the condition you found the dog!
Sounds like you are already emotionally attached to the dog ~ if gone unclaimed, claim her as your own but be sure you do it the right way ~ this way down the road someone can not come back on you and take the dog away...

from what you are saying I think it should be your dog. you showed care for it that the owner did not. I once found a yorkie. Full of fleas and matted. I answered a ad that posted a 75 dollar reward. Found out it had only been gone 2 days. It had a large gash on its neck where the owner tried to clip it. They had bought it for a breeder. Then they refused to pay the reward. I always regretted answering that ad after finding out what type of people they were.

In Hawaii, you cannot claim ownership until thirty days after filing a found dog report with AC. Document everything.
The same shelter can kill a found dog in 3 days however. Go figure.
Check with your local animal control and ask what the law is in your area.
Thanks for taking care of this wayward dog.

You should always keep an eye out for her previous owner, assuming they loved and cared for her. But until then, treat her as your own. Love her, care for her, be a good owner. You never really can claim her as your own, because there is the chance that the owner might show up some random day, which I know is heartbreaking. You are what we would call, a step mom.

Depends on the laws where you live. When I lived in Az. I found a stray labX and took her to the Humane Society to see if someone had reported her missing. They took my info in case someone did but told me that if I was interested in keeping her to just take her home and post flyers around and that if no one came forward in a weeks time that she was legally mine. No one ever came forward and I still have her (this was 8 yrs ago). :o)

Try placing an add in your local paper in the lost and found. If that doesn't work and you want to keep the dog then keep her. Just please dont take her to the human society. Or at least take her to a no kill animal shelter.
