Because it isn't spelled phonetically. On the surface, life would be much easier if people spelled words the way they sounded, but that means if you were English or Australian or Fijian, or from India, you would spell the same words differently, which would make doing crossword puzzles very difficult. So perhaps it is less confusing under the present system. Although fonix is certainly a simpler way to go.

Well, I originally intended to spell it "fonetick", but it just didn't look right.
So, I decided to take the final "k" off. That gave me "fonetic"...a little better, but still not quite right. A few folks thought maybe the "c" ought to be pronounced like an "s", but that just weeded out the REALLY stupid ones.
No, it needed to be a bit fancier, so that people would understand that proper spelling and grammar belongs to the intellectually superior.
So, I finally settled for "phonetics".
How did I know some idiots were going to try to teach children to spell by getting them "hooked on phonics"??
Or should I make that "hukt aun fonecks"??
I really like "psychiatrist"...what do you guys think?

I'm Australian; we're not phonetic, as a general rule.

We do that to trip up foreigners. Its an unwritten way for us Americans to know when someone aint from around here just by looking at their correspondence.

cuz most English uses of the Greek Phi letter is to render it as 'ph'and not 'f". The Italians are more logical in rendering phi as f

ha! good one! if the plural of mouse is mice , why isn't the plural of grouse, grice? english is one of the hardest lanuages to learn (other than chinese) because there is an exception to every rule. i still love our language, though, cause it's so juicy!
