Thanks for the good answers.

(Get rip of my cat is not an alternative. Is a member of the family).

I layer the bottom of the litter box with baking soda. Works wonders and is safe for my cat.

My vet advised me against Febreeze. She told me it can cause respiratory problems in animals

I have four cats and I only smell their boxes if I've neglected to clean them for over a week (which I rarely do). How is this possible? Silica crystals! I SWEAR by them! Just be careful, the litters that claim to contain crystals are a sham. They're ok but they're not the best way to do it. Get a good hard clumping litter, like Tidy Cats Multi-Cat, and a container of crystal litter. Fill a fresh litter box with the Tidy Cats, then top it off with a layer of crystals. Don't worry about mixing it, your cat will do that for you. I promise the smell will be drastically reduced. You can use Silica crystals as a primary litter as cats will adjust to it with little problems (I used it that way for a week when I had my cats fixed), but it can be a bit pricey, as a 4-8lb container will run u between $6 and $20. As long as u clean ur mixed litter regularly it should trap the odor just fine.

The only other tip I can offer is a covered box. I use a rolling box so I don't have to use a manual scoop or take off the cover to clean it. Makes things much easier and my cats appreciate the privacy.

Hope this helps.

High quality cat food. Daily scooping. Clumping litter. A monthly dump of all the litter, then a good bleach scrub down of the pan, dry well, and (don't laugh- this works really well for a few weeks) spray the inside with a cooking spray like Pam before you put the fresh litter in. Afterwards, after you scoop each day, a sprinkle of baking soda mixed in (like a teaspoon or so.) Voila! You'd never know we have 6 cats here. Honest!

Getting rid of the odor, rather than covering it up is the best. Baking soda is good, scooping frequently is good, using a good clumping litter is all good provided that your cat will use whatever you provide.

If you have the litter box in a room with a window, get a fan and blow the air outside or place the box in a bathroom with an electric vent. For the smelliest problems, nothing else will really do.

Cats have diets rich in protein and fats which make for some pretty stinky poop.

A good scoopable litter, not the cheap rocks. It makes it very easy to scoop out. Scoop it out a couple times a day to keep down on the odor. Empty the litter and clean the box once a week. Also add some baking soda to the litter.

For every cat in the house, a litter box stays fresh for 2 days. If there are 2 cats in the house, you'll smell that urine-ammonia smell after one day. If you've got 4 cats, it'll smell in half a day.

The only way to beat the smell is to stay ahead in litter box changes, and to wash the box with hot water and dish detergent frequently, too.

In a perfect world, every cat would be like my friend Sam's cat, who uses the toilet and will not use a litter box.

Use a scoop to take out the fecies. Dump your box on a regualr basis. I don't use any of those formulated cat littlers, just a regular clay cat litter and I have no problems unless I get a little lazy.

Sometimes the smell isnt just coming from the litter........

You need five things:
. A covered litterbox
. Arm & Hammer litter
. Arm & Hammer pet odor eliminator (to spray on carpets: kind of like febreeze)
. Simple Solution stain and odor remover
. Cat wipes

*These items will do wonders!!!!! i swear, i have two kittens right now; they are messy eaters, and spill everything, and have even had some accidents. They are the rowdiest kittens ever. Yet i dont smell a single thing! A covered litter box will keep most of the smell in. i suggest the brand Omega for the litterbox. The arm and hammer litter smells like nothing! i stuck my head in there to smell when the litterbox was filled with poop and all i could smell was citrus! Just spray the arm and hammer odor eliminator on your carpet and the room smells fresh again. I feed my kittens canned food and it really starts to stink in the room, so i just spray it on the carpet and its gone! If your cat has an accident, it can really stink, so i suggest the Simple Solutions stain and odor remover. It's pretty amazing. If you use cat wipes on your cat it will keep him clean and he/she will smell good.

Keep the cat box clean by cleaning it every day and totally changing the litter and cleaning the box with a disinfectant once a week. By doing thise you shouldn't really have a odor coming from the box. Good luck

Apart from giving the cat away, or teaching it to ask to be let out when it wants to go (and retain its urge through the night) as I did with mine (you can teach dogs, so why not cats) - I can only suggest a commercial product called "Nil-odor", or vanilla, which I used on my boat effectively. Good luck!
