I'm 5'11 and currently a middle hitter./blocker
but there's some problems
1. the varsity has two middles and they wont be graduating this yr. so i could take their place. 1 really deserves to be there but the other one talks bad about the coach, goofs off, but the coach loves her like alot.:C
2. The only varsity setter (who's not that good, but basically is the setter b/c shes short) is graduating. and there is no one in the lead to take her place b/c the two jv setters suck as well.lol
3. I cant really practice hitting at practice b/c the setters rarely set it high enough over the net for me to hit it with my arm extended, much less even jump.
What I'm wondering is, do you think it would be worthwhile for me to work on setting for the rest of the season and over the summer and come back and tryout as a setter?
I have some trouble with setting cross court, but I'm the best backsetter and at setting to the middle. I just didn't know, with my height and stuff, if it would be

Go for it. If your coach is smart, they will not only allow you to work as the setter, they should be drooling over a setter that is 5'11". The team could even run a 6-2 with you as the other setter or run a 5-2. Before everyone goes ?????? You would be playing opposite the other setter. You would set when you are in the back row and the other setter would be subbed out for an attacker. When you are in the front row, you will hit right side and the other setter will sub back in. 5 hitters with 2 setters.
Work on the left handed tip/dump. When the other setter is back row and you get the second ball as a front row player, you should be ready to dump the ball over. You are tall and front row, so it will be legal and lethal. Make sure you do not use that shot when you are back row. It will be an illegal back row attack.

I am 5' 10 or 11" as well and I changed from middle to setter this year too. I am having a lot of fun with the new position and i don't regret it at all. I had the same problem as you (bad setters) on my club team. Setting is a HUGE responsibility and you have to keep in mind that you do NOT get any of the glory that the killer hitters receive. You have to be there for the love of the game and not the glory to be a good setter. It takes a lot of hard work but if you are a good tall setter, you WILL go far. As long as you are doing it because you really want to and not just so that you will make the team, it is a good decision. Good Luck!

It is good. You will be the soul of your team.
You will have the option to run 5-1, 5-2, and 6-2 once you become a good setter and a good hitter. Before this change, it looks like your team could only run 4-2 offense.

first of all there is no 5-2 i think he meant 5-1. and you should be an opposite instead and stick with 5-1 because it sounds like your team isnt exactly good, so 6-2 would be very confusing, and if you are back row setting, pretty much you dont have hitters cuz your opposite is a shortie. with 5-1 you can hit back row (doubt your team can handle that) but yeah coming from MB to OH is great because your blocking skill from MB will help you shut down, or at least in attempt to shut down the other teams outside offense.

yes you could just be strictly a setter or you could also be a rightside hitter because then you can hit and step in as setter sometimes
