Many times when i'm dealing with a cashier they aren't very pleasant. I am very friendly and always ask how they are, thank them etc. I cannot stand when they just start ringing things up and do not greet the customer with a simple hello! Its so easy! Just say Hi! Hello, Hey there, etc. Also if they are slow as molasses. Some people can't help it that they are slow, but trying to move more quickly would be nice. Wrong change, etc.
I was at a gas station and bought something for $3.98 and I paid with a $5.00 bill,the cashier gave me back a single dollar. I looked at him, and he looked at me like I was crazy. I asked if I could have my 2 cents back, and he sighed and said "oh (with a disgusted look on his face) MOST people don't want their 2 cents" I personally like all my change not because i'm a cheap skate, but because its mine and I like to use exact change when making purchases if possible.
Do I complain? No, but I did with this situation. He no longer works there because they had SEVERAL complaints of him being rude to customers. Stupid jerk.

I expect the cashier will wait on me and take my stuff thru the line quickly and efficiently.
NO talking on cell phones. No rudeness. No complaints about other people to me.
What really upset me was, after I'd waited in the only open line for like 10 minutes, she had the person in front of me close the chain. She called out to me "Sorry! I am going on break now. Another cashier will be here within 5 or 10 minutes." And you can bet I complained!
It didn't help when the manager suggested that I should have just left the stuff I'd wanted on the girl's conveyor belt and walk out, to do my shopping at WalMart, instead.

I have complained at 3 different stores about the same 2 people. I expect a pleasant transaction everytime. The ones I complained about were very slow, holding a conversation with someone else, did not know what to do when they ran into a problem(i.e. Void) and could not count my change back correctly. I think these 2 people did lose their jobs because of complaints but I believe I was not the only person to do so. The one was so unbelievably slow that I started to scan and bag the items myself and then went straight to the cs counter. We turned around to find the cashier was turning people away so she could close. I don't think that is any company's policy to turn customers away when so many are in line.

I dont' like it if the cashier is rude with a bad attitude or talks to someone else and ignores me. After all, I am the customer, and they should respect that. If a cashier is rude or disrespectful to me, that is enough for me to not shop there again. And yes, if it was bad enough, I would report the cashier, and I wouldn't worry about whether or not they got fired, although getting them fired is not my intention. I figure if the person wanted their job badly enough they'd do a good job and it's not my problem if they get fired. But I figure it is my problem if I have a terrible experience at a store and i don't do something about it. My intention about reporting a bad experience is to ensure that the problem is resolved, however that may be.

Yea I agree with the other poster. I hate it when the cashier is talking to someone else while they are ringing you up. I think that is so rude. Or when they dont even say anything to you at all. But no, I havent complained about a person, its just not worth the time. Besides I would hate for the person to get fired cause of me and them have kids.

I bought a book at Borders for work yesterday and the cashier ticked me off. I handed him my Borders Rewards card and then my credit card and both times when I reached my hand out to take them back, he just threw them at me across the counter. It was nothing major, but I found it to be quite rude. I've also dealt with cashiers in smaller shops that stand their talking on their cell phones having a personal conversation and never even acknowledge you - they don't say "Hi, how are you?" or "Thanks, have a nice day." Depending on my mood, I might complain, but not to a manager. I usually just say something to the cashier that's ticking me off.

I hate it when a cashier stays on the phone with a friend, or jokes around with a fellow cashier, keeping the paying customers waiting.

When I get change and bills back, I hate it when they give me the bills first and then put the changes on top. The change often gets dropped and it is not as efficient when putting it back into my wallet. When I was a cashier a customer pointed this out to me and I never did it that way again.

I hate it when a cashier tells me to put my bags in the cart. This only happens at Wal-Mart.
I do my grocery shopping every week and the groceries have to last the whole week, so I'm always buying a lot of stuff whenever I go. Oftentimes, by the time the cashier has filled all the bags and has run out of room to work, I'm still putting stuff up on the counter. And then, like clockwork, they'll tell me to stop what I'm doing and put the bags in the cart.
Don't get me wrong--I hate it when they say that, no matter how it's said. But if they say it politely and in a light tone, as in "Hey, could you please put these bags in the cart? I've run out of room," then I'll do as requested and swallow back my aggravation. They don't know that I hate it when they do that and politeness never deserves an angry response. But if they ask rudely or in a harsh tone, as in "Put the bags in the cart," depending on my mood, I will do one of two things. If I'm in a good mood before this happens, I will sloooowly double bag everything and tie off the top of each bag before putting it in the cart. And then talk to a manager when I'm done. If I'm in a bad mood and this happens, I'll say, "I would like to talk to your manager. Now." And I won't move from that spot until a manager comes to me.
I suppose being told to put my bags in the cart bothers me because I'm the customer. They are there for my convenience, not the other way around. A customer should not have to stop what they're doing and attend to a store employee's needs. And when an employee is rude--well, that's just not acceptable. I don't feel that the customer is always right. When workplaces take that attitude, good employees end up being fired whenever a jerk comes in looking for a handout. (My mom works at the Ritz-Carlton and has told me horror stories about people who just want a free stay and will make up stuff to complain about.) But customers, regardless of where they're shopping, deserve respect. If I'm parting with money at a store, whether it is 1 cent or 10,000 dollars, I expect the person there to treat me in a polite and respectful fashion. End of story.
Most of the times that I complain, I don't want to get the person fired--I just don't want other customers or me to continue being treated poorly. Other times that I complain(as in an incident in which a cashier called my mother the b-word under her breath for refusing to stop what she was doing and put the bags in the cart), I do want the person fired. Some people are just too rude and/or aggressive to be working with customers. It is in everyone's best interest, including their own, that they find another type of employment before someone ends up hurt and/or in jail.

I don't like the cashier to be talking to someone else the entire transaction. Respect is a nice thing on both sides of the counter.
