Or do I even have to bring a gift at all?

Definitely bring a gift, unless you were asked not to. You didn't say anything about the person, whether it's a man or a woman, or what kind of things they like, so it's hard to tell you what kind of gift to bring.

The problem with people who are 40 and up is, they usually have everything they need already. Try something fun or unexpected, for instance a woman might like to get a pass to a day spa where they will give her a facial and manicure/pedicure. Or if she's not that type of person, think of some other unusual, thoughtful gift. Men are a bit harder to buy for, it helps if you know their personality, and their likes and dislikes. Movie passes are ok, or a gift certificate to a nice restaurant. Sometimes a bottle of wine or a bunch of nice flowers is all you need, especially if you don't know the person very well.

It would be nice to bring a gift. It really depends on the person, though, as to what you would get.

Some ideas: a gourmet basket of food, a gift basket of bath items, something practical but fun for the home, a book or CD you think they may like, or a gift cert to a book store.

It would be considered rude if you didn't...I say a gift certificate to the mall, or a store that the birthday person shops at. A bottle of wine is also a good idea. Even a certificate to a bookstore.

Forty black balloons. My wife got FOUR cakes (two had black icing) and FOUR TY BLACK BALLOONS. I ordered a cake, my son ordered a cake(he was working nights so our paths seldom crossed), her mom ordered a cake, and the folks she worked with ordered a cake...FROM THE BAKERY IN THE STORE! (supermarket).
Also, they ordered 40 black balloons. She had a time getting them into her Nissan Sentra. They were bouncing around in the living room when we went to bed and when we got up, they were gone. That has been a big family mystery (other things have mysteriously disappeared over the 24 years we lived here on an old s.e. Virginia plantation). Also, in our dining room, I rolled one of those BLUE racket ball balls on the floor and it was making 90 and 120 degree turns...no wind, floor is level. Odd.
I know that has NOTHING to do with a gift, but it went along with the 40 black balloons and their disappearance.

40 year olds typically have everything they need so I would think a Visa gift card or other gift card would be a nice gesture. My boyfriend is turning 40 in a few weeks so I'm in the same boat as you! :)

Yes, bring a gift, it is expected. The 40th is ruby, and there is a line of ruby colored keepsake decorative glass out there. Check out gift shops, who have different items for the 40th.
Cash is always welcome.
