It all depends on how much I've eaten before I start drinking. Assuming I have an empty stomach (not having eaten in 3 hours), I can get drunk off 6 shots of hard alcohol (40%) in a two-hour period. If I had just eaten a meal, I would probably feel almost nothing. So I usually drink on an empty stomach...

I am with you and not like your friend. Occasionally if I missed a meal, or I am tired, etc it might be less. It's also dependent on how strong the drinks are, how fast you are drinking, sex and weight. Here is a calculator to figure your blood alcohol level.
But drinking 5 or more drinks at a drinking occasion is officially considered a binge drinker. Drinking to get drunk and not feeling or showing how drunk you might actually be are all signs of alcoholism.

I'm usually buzzing kind of hard after 3, but I can go up to 7+ in an hour. (But if I go that high, I'm pretty much not drinking for several hours/taking it easy.)
